THE RETURN OF THE PATTY MELT

Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of the return of the patty melt, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they, of course, are not that thrilled to hear about the return of the patty melt, for obvious reasons.

Friday morning greetings on our DAY OFF!  Richard has come down with the class cold, brought to us by one of the professors.  I slept in until 8:15 GMT and I'm letting Richard sleep as long as he wants.  Today we 're going across to the train station to look into transport back to London.  The tour group on Monday is going straight to Heathrow, which seems silly for us to do.

We're also going to visit the shrine of Julian of Norwich and then explore the wonderful shops and restaurants we've been whisked past on our walks to various churches around town.

Good morning, all.

Love the updates, Ginny. Hope Richard is feeling better soon.

Same for Ron Pulliam and anyone else under the weather.

Yikes! The local critic doesn't care for Peter Pan. Except for Brent Barrett.

We've had a late breakfast and accomplished two missions.  Purchased 2 first class tickets for the 11am train to London on Monday, which cost less than one regular ticket would have on the day of travel.  Also made our way up the hill to the Royal Mail office for stamps for postcards and to mail a sympathy card to the family of a parishioner who died the day after we arrived in London.

Fr. Richard is now resting a bit - thanks for the vibes for him!

I'm not sure that I understand the point of an Anglo/French remake of THE BRIDGE but, who knows, maybe it will turn out to be good http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2013/jan/10/the-bridge-tunnel-sky-atlantic-remake

I've not seen HITCHCOCK but it sounds as bad as THE GIRL, which I absolutely hated and didn't believe was in any way an accurate portrayal of Hitchcock.

I have to say it is nothing less than an honor to have been here -- right here on HHW -- for the return of the patty melt.

Might seek one out myself, probably at one of the ubiquitous New England diners, where I'm guessing I shall have to make a special request for the raw onion.

So, Jerry's Deli has a "melt" section on the menu?  "Melt" sandwiches are the greatest, and could easily be my downfall.

It just occurred to me that Denny's probably serves up a decent patty melt.  Maybe that's a safer bet for my own return, as opposed to leaving a good patty melt up to the New Englanders.  Yes, this sounds do-able.

I don't frequent Denny's except once or twice a year for a good outrageous breakfast.  But the one other thing I do like there is the "Super Bird" (turkey) melt.  Around a decade ago or thereabouts, they introduced a wonderfully delicious and satisfying one called the Mega Melt with roast beef and much, much more, piled high.  Sadly, it didn't last, but it was one of the most superb sandwiches I've ever had.  I think it was on thick grilled sourdough, and really, you can't do better than a great sandwich on thick grilled sourdough.  Except, of course, for a traditional patty melt on grilled rye ... which is where we came in.

Later, when I'm out and about, perhaps this very weekend, I'll stop at one of the original IHOP International House of Pancakes that are still in their original buildings, and indulge in my very own return to my very own first ever patty melt.  Good thing the closest one of those is some 30 miles away, because that would be another downfall.  I have so many downfalls.

Good morning, all!

And I am sick. I've had my flu shot, and I don't thnk it's the flu, but I spet the entire night running to and from the bathroom, getting very little sleep. I'm missing breakfast this morning with DR edisaurus, but she doesn't need what I've got. Her documentary on Doc Pomus had three showings at Lincoln Center this week, and I am really sorry that I missed it. Beyond that, I am also missing today's orchestra reading of FIORELLO and I was really looking forward to it.

So, I'm not very happy today. And I'm very tired. I am happy that DR Ginny is having a good time and I'm sorry to hear my good friend Richard is fighting a cold. I'm happy that the patty melt has had a renaissance.

DR Matthew, I am sorry to hear about your change in domesticity, but after the visit from the Boor, I think we all saw this coming. That doesn't make it any easier.

I have never had a patty melt. But it does look very similar to many hamburgers.  Here yhey are not allowed to serve hambugers rare like that picture. But regardless you could not pay me to eat it rare like that. Do many people actually prefer it that way.
