bk, glad your computer seems to be somewhat back to normal. Tech problems always make me very crabby.

For fun last night, I took out the JAY release of their "complete" Stop the World, I Want to Get Off.  I bought it when it first came out and my memory back then was that it was one of the worst recordings I'd ever heard - in every way, but especially technically.  I've amended that opinion to say it is THE worst recording I've ever heard of theater music.  It is, in a word, appalling.  The band sounds like it's in another stage - let me tell you that the job of a record producer isn't to show up and sit in the booth and listen to sound like that and say, "Good show."  You don't just set up a few mics and call that a recording.  The singers are blah, and the conducting is so perverse in terms of tempos and emphasis - all you have to do is listen to the original Broadway cast album - it, too, is not very well recorded, but the conducting is as it should be and at least when the singers aren't singing you can actually hear the band and the orchestrations.  Whoever produced the B'way version didn't baffle the singers, so when you bring them front and center the band just goes away.  Makes one appreciate all the more the pioneering work done by Goddard Lieberson back then.

Gee, I guess I'll add that to my amazon wish list, right after that Serbo-Croatian cast recording of Legally Blonde. NOT!

Wow!  Didn't know about the Jay recording, and I'm sure glad I read this before "discovering" it.  Now I really must pull out the original cast LP and give that a listen for my first time in a few decades.

Two-star rating on Amazon, from 12 customer reviews.  They've got the sample tracks up, so let's give those a listen, shall we?

My goodness.  Be sure to glance over those "reviews".  From Alan in New York:

"This recording is well-conducted, the orchestra plays terrifically, the orchestrations sound fabulous, and the supporting cast is fine. And it contains the entire score.... I've heard almost all of the releases in the JAY Masterworks series, and I think this is one of the best..."

Which proves, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that there is no accounting for "taste".

Good afternoon. We never did get that rain or haboob yesterday. I think our last measurable rain was .06 inches in April.

Again on the phone with Apple forever, trying to suss out this Time Capsule icon thing - there's a firmware update for the Time Capsule, so before sussing any further we have to do that.  Of course, we can't do that because we get an error message because it won't do the download.  So, we did a thing called speedtest and that revealed the culprit and it's a huge surprise: Time Warner.  My download speed is 0.26 instead of 10 to 15 like any normal high-speed Internet.  No wonder I can't play any videos or do anything and why downloads are taking twenty minutes instead of thirty seconds - hence why the firmware download ain't happening.  So I called Time Warner and told them what was going on - they said blithely my five year old modem "appears" to be fine.  I told them 0.26 was not fine.  He immediately blamed the Time Capsule router, which is what they always do.  So, despite my not wanting to do his stupid checks, I unplugged the Ethernet cable from the Time Capsule and went directly into the computer and we did speedtest again.  Oops.  0.26.  So, I said, "Gee can't blame Time Capsule so I blame YOU."  I plugged the ethernet back into the Time Capsule and he booked an appointment for tomorrow when someone will be here between eleven and noon to give me a new up to date modem.  I got off the phone and found nothing was working - couldn't even get on the Internet.  I knew when I unplugged that ethernet cable that everything would get screwed up - thank you Time Warner.  I called Apple, we unplugged the power of both Time Capsule and the modem, replugged and I'm back on.  IF this new modem doesn't have great speed and I mean the HIGHEST possible, then AT&T here I come next week.

It's nice to pay for high speed Interned and instead get low-speed Internet that's the equivalent of having dial-up.  I HATE THESE PEOPLE.

But hopefully the new modem will do the trick because this one's obviously fried.  If so, and thing are working speedily, including You Tube (now all that makes perfect sense - of course I can't play any videos), then I'll probably stay put for a little while longer.

The new modem cannot come fast enough - trying to download one lousy WAV file that should take no more than a minute - it's taking forty.

BK

I know it's Thursday and ASK BK was yesterday, but I just saw this today

http://youtu.be/MgR5qfjyiws

It's the trailer for Saving Mr. Banks about Walt Disney's attempt to make a film out of Mary Poppins. Your friend Richard  M Sherman is portrayed in the film.

Have you heard anything from him about it?

Most JAY studio recordings are like that, IMHO.  In some cases. it's nice to have complete recordings of shows for resource purposes, but they can be hard to listen to

Good evening, BK and  DR's all,

One more pop-in, before my last regular rehearsal for the sinking ship play. As good as it is on some levels, it's another case of too much "staging" for a reading. For instance, being asked to literally stage "strangle" someone with two hands... while reading my lines from the script. Really?
Too much. Gaaah.

BK, thank you for reminding me about the Speed test. I took one again and found my speed is okay right now, but I'm still looking for better access than Time Warner. They've been a nightmare.

Thank you too for the great Kritzerland songs. Can't wait to dive into those.

I LOVED the Fiddler Chorus Line Number, being a former Fiddler-ite for years. haha

And Linked-in? I dunno. I still say yes, to connections I know, but have no idea why. If I signed up for and spent time on all of those sites that people beg you to join, I'd never get out the door.

I hope everyone is having a smashingly good day.
