I don't think the filmed version will change too many minds. But I will likely buy the DVD when it comes out.

Actually what was surprising to me was news that there's a video version of a British Into the Woods production that will also be shown in the theaters in the future. It looked dreadful, IMO, but it seems oddly timed with the movie version. I wouldn't think the studios would want another version so close to their own.

I believe this version of "Into The Woods," another show I am not fond of, was used in the Central Park prduction a couple of years ago with Amy Adams playing the Baker's Wife.

I have read you saying this on several occasions.  May I ask what it is about the show you do not like?

I think the first act has a lot of funny things about it, but I think the second act is mean and nasty: killing the baker's wife right after she encounters the Prince is one example, killing Jack's mother is another. "No one is Alone" seems false coming from a writer who'd spent a lot of time  in other shows until then reminding us we're born alone and we die alone. The play is essentially about getting what we think we want and then finding it isn't, but THE FANTASTICKS says it so economically and simply. If the first act hinges on the witch getting her beauty back and using her powers, then what the hell is happening in that dreadful "Last Midnight" number?  And, I don't think the score is very good; it's a dip in quality between SUNDAY IN THE PARK and ASSASSINS.

I agree that Into the Woods is not my favorite Sondheim, but Assassins is a whole evening of No One Is Alone. "You think you can't connect? Connect to us!"

If you're a like-minded assassin, maybe.

You have found me out. :)

My real name is Sherlock Holmes.

Not quite, DR Laura, but thanks.

Back from a major shopping trip with my mother, during which I came closer to losing my temper with her than ever before.  The next time I have a trip planned, she won't know about it until right before we leave.

Calming vibes. Perhaps you need one of those hot stone massages Cillaliz wrote about the other day.

Sounds good to me!

Pshaw! She's downright short-tempered and mean. I'm afraid of her! :)

DR Ginny, what trip are you taking that your mother has disrupted?

She hasn't disrupted anything yet, DR Elmore, but she's been stewing about our upcoming New York trip since the day I told her about it.  And she seems to think I'm going to take off and leave her with an empty refrigerator and no toilet paper.

And that I'm never coming back.

She's afraid of being abandoned. Perhaps you need to find a sitter.

This is so unlike the mother you have always talked about.  Have you spoken with her doctor?  Maybe she needs an adjustment with a medication.

She lives at The Home, doesn't she? They will take care of her while you are gone.

Yes, I know.  I will alert the campus social worker that I'll be away.

Sometimes, my parents don't remember from the beginning of a conversation to the end of a conversation.  We have the same conversation over and over and over.   Sometimes I want to scream.  Thankfully they don't usually remember that either.    The hot stone massage is good. Right now it wasn't enough to take the pain away, but it's better

Yes, DR Laura, but she's still in "independent living" and very reluctant to ask for/accept much assistance.

She has a routine appointment next week, but she's not a very compliant patient.

It isn't easy getting old and living alone. I have had several frightened periods during this crippled state, not to mention little work and little income. It ain't easy, and I do worry about coping when I'm older.  There were days I'd have loved someone coming by to help me with errands, get the coffee out of the top cabinet, or change a lightbulb.

Thanks for the explanation, Larry.

You're welcome! I know there are folk who love it. I felt Steve was on a fantastic roll through the 70s and, after SWEENEY TODD, he let the air out of he balloon with MERRILY. He told me right after it closed that he had never wanted to do the show, and it was all because of pressure from Furth and Prince that he did it. Of course, at that time he was very bitter and swore to me, at a Men's Chorus rehearsal in Carnegie Hall, that he was giving up the theatre and writing computer games for Parker Brothers. Then, after a break, SUNDAY happened and he was back. I think his work's been hit or miss since then, but the Sondheim cult thinks everything he produces is art, and I think that attitude's led to other good writers being overlooked or ignored.  It isn't his fault, but it must be difficult to have a claque calling it music when you're simply passing gas.
