Saturday afternoon greetings!

Everybody's having fun today!

My fun today was presiding over the January meeting of AAUW Middletown.  Our speaker was Dr. Lisa Mannix, Butler County Coroner.  She was informative and personable and told us it's not as glamorous as it looks on CSI and such.

NO!! I don't believe it! I'm sure it's just like the TV shows!  ;-)

Looks like DR Elmore will have two great days in a row. And one for Vixmom, as well.

Either that, or someone has kidnapped them and hacked their passwords.   Oy!

DR Ben and Anthony just left after a wonderful visit that rushed by.  I am now all caught up on their whirlwind trip to Wisconsin and Minnesota, which sounds like so much fun, and I have a working non-regional Blu-Ray player showing me gorgeous pictures.

We toasted the New Year and laughed and gossiped. They watched me limp and lurch down the hall.  It was great fun.

I love having company.

I just finished watching "The World's End," with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.  If you like "Shaun of the Dead," you'll like this, too.  It's over the top and very funny. :D

DR cillaliz, good news about the tree.  During one of my Goodspeed jobs, either 1998 or 2004, following a hug storm, a tree fell outside the building where I was working and took down the power lines. It took a crew several hours to remove the fallen object and restore power. You made a wise decision.

Thanks.  I knew that I had to at least deal with the portion that was about to fall and wreak havoc, but I wanted to keep the tree. Now that it's gone, I really like how open the yard seems and there is still the last tree standing....well not the last, but there were three maples and the one in the middle, the skinniest and the one that had been too shaded to grow, is now the one left standing.  It actually looks nice

Thanks DRs TCB, Cillaliz and vixmom. I guess the penguin word is stones. Although I would never associate stones with penguins. But apparently they can eat stones.

I've also read that when penguins court, the male brings the female a stone.  Don't know if it's true

Criterion has released a terrific 5 disc (Blu-Ray/DVD) version of IT'S A MAD (4) WORLD with many great extras.  The collection contains both the restored roadshow and the general release version of the picture.

I watched the restored roadshow version last night, and I was disappointed.  I really like the movie, but next time I watch it, I'll stick with the general release version.

The problem with the 30 minutes longer "restored" roadshow version is that, with one possible exception, none of the restored footage is really necessary and none of it has been color corrected, so that it's inclusion is distracting.  In several cases, the picture elements are missing altogether, so we only have the sound track and production stills, while in others missing lines of dialogue are covered by subtitles.  There are even a couple of shots that, apparently, come from a Chinese (?) version of the movie, complete with Chinese (?) subtitles.

The one sequence that would have been nice to have in the film is  phone conversation between Spencer Tracy and Buster Keaton, which explains Keaton's purpose in the latter part of the movie.  Unfortunately, the picture portion of this scene is lost, replaced by stills, so all we have is the soundtrack.

I know that many people enjoy these "restored" versions of classic films (e.g. A STAR IS BORN, LOST HORIZON) that replace missing footage with production stills, but aside from any academic benefit, I do find these reconstructions difficult to watch because they take one out of the movie.

Sounds like what they did with the laserdisc release of "1776," which I really enjoyed.

It's been awhile since I've watched it, but as I recall, on the DVD of 1776, they integrated all the restored footage color-wise, so it was not as apparent what had been added.

The other day, via Netflix, we watched STAND UP GUYS with Pacino, Walken and Arkin.

We really enjoyed it.

Wow! I had no idea that the US was so unbelievably good at ice dancing.   I'm really enjoying watching the nationals.   don't watch skating much leading up to this point, but love the nationals and the Olympics

They weren't able (I assume because of the technology at the time) to fix the color, so they left it as is, but the original laserdisc version was longer.  The DVD didn't put back all the cut footage.  But I thought it was an interesting study on movie editing in general.  You could see exactly what they cut.

I was planning on going to work for a couple of hours today.  It's a little late, but I should get some ordering done.

Be back later.

You can go but be back soon
You can go but while you're working,
Just play some pacing round,
Until you're home safe and sound.

We had a wonderful visit with Dear Larry! We talked and laughed and shared Sparking Cider and Banana Bread. We talked some more and then we set up the blu-ray player. It was simpler than I thought it might be. Larry has Region 2 discs and a DVD (Nudie) so we were able to test and make sure it worked and it does. He then very thoughtfully gave us his old non-region DVD player. We will have to borrow some out-of-region 1 discs from him to make sure it works on our television (it should without problem). Anthony thought we had some Region 2 DVDs but we don't, what we have are PAL format DVDs burned by friends. Region is different from Format. The PALs are region free so that's not the issue, it's the format which is not playable on our old DVD player. These should work once we get it hooked up but we will still need to try the out-of-region 1 discs.

Anyway, we had a great visit. Anthony will try to visit Larry again later in the week or next week when he's at Toyland. I, alas, will be at work.

I have to check my schedule regarding Little Me. My niece is coming in to NYC at the same time to visit her boyfriend and she wants to see us as well. She's not the musical theatre type so I won't suggest she accompany me to Little Me, besides, she might get bored at an HHW get-together.
