And, we may have an opportunity to exceed our budget projection.  We've been sharing that space with an organization whose staff wants to shop the leftovers tomorrow!

Thanks for the congrats!

I've been a Netflix subscriber since 2006 and make good use of it. I have both streaming and the discs. It's true that the DVDs are usually available before the streaming, but there can be a long wait for the new releases of popular DVDs, although Netflix has improved in this area recently. With the exception of the latest DOC MARTIN season, I'm able to get most of what I want pretty quickly. I prefer streaming because there's no wait and no trouble with discs getting lost in the mail or damaged. Not everything is available on streaming though, which is why I also have the DVD subscription.

I'm glad to say I was on facebook and happened to see that TCB was on too.  I had a little chat with him-he says he'll be back in a day or two.

Streaming video requires good broadband, which I get from Time Warner (standard, not turbo). I've never had cable TV; I think it's just too expensive. My Netflix subscription is far cheaper than I'd pay for cable TV and gives me most of what I want. I sometimes stream from PBS's website, but their streaming video is often faulty. Frankly, the PBS website is crap--one of the worst website designs I've seen--which is a shame, as I used to be a big PBS fan. The PBS shows usually move to Netflix after they expire on PBS and then I'm able to watch them without interruption.

I stream from my laptop. If you want to stream on your TV then you need a Roku or some other device. I know little about this since I never do it.

Bruce, Netflix streaming offers many things I think you'd like, including many of the foreign TV shows. I like to watch a new show on Netflix first. Many of the shows I thought I wanted on disc proved to not be that good.

For years we couldn't watch our local PBS station for the same reason.  Finally we can get it in HD.  It is still a local station and the new episodes of DOC MARTIN just began.  Unfortunately our direcTV went out a few times while the show was recording.  It was rather annoying but not too long that we couldn't follow the story.

Before purchasing our next house we will make sure we can get the fastest possible internet connection out there along with streaming.

TOD

I've never streamed.

I can count on my hands the number of times I've even watched something on YouTube all the way through.  (Outside the Box doesn't count.  :) )

I don't even allow my TV or players to be connected to the internet.  Well, perhaps "allow" is a little extreme.  I mean, it's not as if they're going to go online and do their evil deeds while I'm asleep or anything ..... right?  (On the other hand, maybe one can never be too sure.....)  I only connect via the wifi "dongle" to update firmware.

But I digress!  Oh lord, how I digress.

I'm so dedicated to "physical media" that, like BK, the thought of even learning what all of those crazy names mean has never been tempting in the least, and I don't even want to think about the quality issues.  Which isn't necessarily logical.  I pay an enormous amount for cable, of which I actually watch very little, and of course cable reception and quality can run the gamut, too.  So, I know that's a long held prejudice.  But I also feel I don't need the temptation of having thousands more things at my fingertips -- especially at any additional expense.

Now, having spewed all of that, I have to admit that after BK first posted about House of Cards the other day, I did, in fact, consider that a free month of Netflix just might be something to take advantage of.  From what I've heard, it's obvious I'd like seeing the show.  It doesn't have to be one I feel the need of "owning", like the real classics on my shelf.  Maybe this would be a good experiment.  Maybe.  Just maybe.

Edit:  But that room isn't "wired", and it ain't gonna be.  I'd have to do it over the wifi, and I wonder how good or consistent a connection that would be for streaming.  Maybe someone here can weigh in on that?

I have been watching it on my laptop and it is just fine  :)

OK, folks, a really important interrelated set of questions: Best bread and best cheese for a grilled cheese sandwich?

seeded rye -  or better yet seeded pumpernickel rye twist   and muenster cheese or really sharp cheddar cheese

Our AAUW budget for 2013-14 projected book sale income at $9000.  We actually made $8985.65.  Close enough?

NICE!!

Pumpernickel sounds good but not seeded rye.  I have been craving a good Jewish rye which I can't get here, seeded of course.  I just am not sure it would be my first pick for grilled cheese.

Well, I couldn't get sourdough at Costco on my way home, so I had to settle for whole grain. Sweet, boring bread. But the manchego with roasted red peppers melted together beautifully. I bought some sharp Cheddar and some Gouda so I can continue to play around with sandwiches.

when  my best friend moved from NY to Nebraska  I used to go to the bakery buy a fresh unsliced seeded rye - wrap it really tightly in saran wrap  and then ship it to her by two day post

That was nice of you.  I used to order it from Zingerman's in Michigan.  I have good Challah from Portland along with sourdough from San Francisco so I don't really need any now.  It would be nice to be able to purchase this locally.  I can get challah, just not to my liking.
