Actually she seems to be in a lot of pain. So it is probably quite realistic. The creepy stuff is not to do with her but the other narrator and the other narrator's sister.

I've been comparing her pain to mine after my injury. I read a bit more and I keep shaking my head how she does everything to make it worst and doesn't do the exercises, on her own, that will help. This really expresses so very much of what I went through and still do. I fortunately knew about the breathing methods she is learning, but that who dependency part and the frustration of it. Gardner has done an excellent job of expressing it all while maintaining DD's personality in dealing with it. And wisely made it the left shoulder so she could drive

The narrator twist is great! But I admit I am rather distracted by relating too closely to the detective's injuries, physical & psychologically.

Poor DR Ginny! She just called me thinking she'd get Dr Jekyll and instead she got Mr Hyde. I was in the middle of burning a saucepan of mac'n'cheese, wondering where today's mail was, and pondering a voice message - do I listen or ignore? - and she got the brunt of my frustration. I am so sorry, DR Ginny!

And, since DR ChasSmith will be in for the April 3 performance, perhaps we could have dinner before the show?
