Back from New York.

I saw Bullets over Broadway on Saturday. They had rush seats for $37 (only for the previews). The ticket was marked "partial view" but it was really a pretty good seat, especially for that price. I just couldn't see some action on the left side. I enjoyed the show but wouldn't say it's one of my favorites. The actors were all great. Love Karen Ziemba in anything she does!

This day has completely gotten away from me - how did that happen? Downloading the second batch. I'll post a bunch of these in the notes, of course. But here's our very own Robert Yacko bringing down the house as an appetizer - this is the first time we've ever done the complete version of this - in What If we only did two verses then went somewhere else. It really works on its own, I think, and if I were to do What If again that's what I'd do.

Yesterday I saw Lyrics and Lyricists at 92 St Y. The songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein were featured. What a great show! The singers were Jonathan Groff, Mandy Gonzalez, Phillipa Soo , Rebecca Luker and Lewis Cleale. They were all great but Ms. Luker and Mr. Cleale were just fantastic. I especially loved Lewis's "Soliloquy" from Carousel and his duet with Rebecca of "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful." When Rebecca sang her verse she didn't sing it as originally written (Do YOU love ME because I'm beautiful..) . She sang "Do I Love YOU because you're beautiful" just as Lewis did. The cast did songs from South Pacific but the songs written for the male characters were sung by the female ones and vice versa. Mr. Groff sang "Wonderful Guy" and Ms. Luker sang "This Nearly Was Mine." The show ended with the entire cast singing "Edelweiss" acapella. What a great show!

Speaking of Barbra, last night I saw her sister, Roslyn Kind, at 54 Below. She put on a great show--she sang mostly new material, including "The Fool on the Hill," "I Can Cook Too," along with "All that Jazz" and "Pure Imagination." Before she sang "All that Jazz" she wondered why she's never been asked to do Chicago, the Musical. She said if anyone knows the producers, the Weisslers, please let them know she's interested. Hmm, if I only knew someone associated with that show.

I've been on the phone for 90 minutes with Rob Berman, planning three lunchtime concerts he will be doing at Trinity Church in the Wall Street area for May 15 (Lehar: The Merry Widow), 22 (Kern: Oh, Boy!), and 29 (Gershwin: Primrose). We discussed what numbers, what singers, etc. I hope it's a huge success and they book him for next year!
