The Tony nominations are big news here as the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's  'All the Way' was nominated for two Tony Awards.  It was nominated for best play.  We never saw it so I, of course, don't have an opinion.

Just heard the principal Tony Award nominees. I have got to get to A GENTLEMAN'S GUDE TO LOVE AND MURDER!

I see that ALADDIN received a nomination for Best Original Score.  Isn't this the Disney cartoon brouht to life?

It's been expanded and there is a new lyricist, so there are more songs than what the movie had.

I realize that, but how does that make it eligible for Best Original Score?

Because it never played on Broadway?

But that is not so unusual receiving a nomination after your death. Oscar Hamerstein received one 36 years after he died and Richard Rodgers received one 17 years for State Fair.

Can anyone name the composer who won a Tony Award 66 years after he died?

"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife."

Jane Austen, "Pride and Prejudice"

Greatest opening sentence ever, and one of the most frequently referenced, I'd guess!

Along with "I am born" and "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" and "Call me Ishmael".

"Call me Ishmael" is a great opening.  I wonder though if it is only so because we know what follows.

There is more?

I was surprised to hear Daniel Radcliffe was snubbed again by the Tonys.   On the other hand I'm thrilled that "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder" got 11 nominations (the most of any show).  I'm glad they gave a nomination to Bryce Pinkham as well as Jefferson Mays. They were both great in the show.

Browsing to see what favorite opening sentences I might have missed I found this site... http://www.infoplease.com/ipea/A0934311.html

There are a few I like and I haven't read the books.  I just might now.

I have read this one but didn't remember the opening sentences as anything extra special.

I have not read the novel but am sure I read the quote many a time.

"He was an inch, perhaps two, under six feet, powerfully built, and he advanced straight at you with a slight stoop of the shoulders, head forward, and a fixed from-under stare which made you think of a charging bull."  Joseph Conrad LORD JIM

"He was an inch, perhaps two, under six feet" is the part I remember and like.

Watching "Infamous." I really like the movie a lot. I know it got buried by "Capote," but the cast is excellent and I'm really enjoying it.

It's either Borodin or Tony Randall, who had been cryogenically preserved since 1961.  I bet not many people knew that.  Put that in your pipe.  Drain pipe that is.

Borodin is correct

Tony awards, pardon the term, is. queer about these things. Yes there are songs from the film, songs cut  from the film and new songs written for the stage. So it seems all the songs old and new were eligible.

When Rodgers and Hammerstein were nominated for State Fair they were nominated only for the songs that were NOT in the film.

Topic of the Day addendum:  right now, I'm reading Mark Helprin's "Winter's Tale" (along with BK's "Red Gold") and this is the first paragraph to the "WT" prologue:

A great city is nothing more than a portrait of itself, and yet when all is said and done, its arsenals of scenes and images are part of a deeply moving plan. As a book in which to read this plan, New York is unsurpassed. For the whole world has poured its heart into the city by the Palisades, and made it far better than it ever had any right to be.

The scenes and images in the book were very vivid.  For this reason I am looking forward to the movie.

I'm only halfway through the book and I can't imagine how they're going to condense it all into a movie...or what they're going to choose to be in the movie.  But watching the trailer, the woman who plays Beverly Penn is British and speaks with a British accent!  The character is born and raised in New York State!  What's that all about??
