One of the things that never fails to bring me out of a bad mood or an "eh" day, is getting lost in a book store, or a thrift store with books that "no one knew" were there, and finding a treasure.  Or a CD, for that matter that wasn't "expected".

Listening to a Rossini overture, or one by von Suppe, or a Strauss waltz.  Or, the final movement of Beethoven's 9th.  Or, the final movements of Mahler's 2nd, 3rd and 8th.  Singing along with FS on "New York, New York" which may also mean that the Yankees won, which is a good thing for me.

When I don't notice that DC Minny has stealthily come alongside me and decided that it was a good time to lick my hand, to remind me, in that kitty cat way of his, that he's my little friend in a fur coat who thinks he's taking care of me, and sometimes convincing me of that.

Thinking of the time I was at Carnegie Hall to see experience a performance of Mahler's 4th, to feel the timpani in my body, to viscerally be with the orchestra, to have the glockenspiels go through my head like something I experienced in a previous lifetime, and to hear the gossamer notes sung by the soprano at the finale.

Hearing Perry Como or Der Bingle always seems to bring sense to some days that lack same.

Listening to Bacharach and marvelling at the melodies and the lyrics.  Trying to sing with Dionne and having fun.

In other news, no Kritzerland yet, but I finally, after all these damn years (so many damn years, damn them), got my Shelly Manne LI'L ABNER

Yippee!!    :)

I'll be giving that a listen tonight, believe you me.

Agreed!  I LOVED Donna Summer when I was in high school.  Still do, really.

TOD:   Hearing "Tap Your Troubles Away" seems to have that good effect.
The latest version I'm hooked on
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCjpP8Yn3f8

I love this!  I tried to find Rita Moreno's version from "Jerry Herman's Broadway at the Hollywood Bowl" (which I also love), but it seems like no one has posted that on YouTube.  Interesting...there are other clips from the show on YouTube, but not that one.

Good morning, all! I'm not sure I slept well, but I was in bed for a long time, which is where I head when I'm down. I don't think I have an ostrich-in-the-sand mentality, but I do go to bed and stay there when I'm unhappy, and I'm not happy. I'm not unhappy, I'm just emotionally down.  I don't have any of those "I wish I were young again" attitudes; I pretty much like what I have accomplished and who I am, all of which I happened as I got to my current age; I was very foolish as a young man, and I have no urge to ever be that person again. I just wish I were aging more gracefully. There's no spouse, no partner, to keep an eye on me, my best friend has dumped me, and, unless that Ohio property sells, I'm going to die alone with little savings. This is not a self-pity post, just my observation of the realities of my existence. So, tje cursory results of yesterday's tests were one more blow.

I'll lick my wounds, pick myself up, and go on, but I don't think that will happen today.
    Peut-être jamais!.. peut-être demain!..
    Mais pas aujourd'hui...

So, I am off to Toyland. May is a very busy month, and I plan to enjoy the fact that I'm hobbling faster than I would like because I have work and that's a good reason to get out of bed.  I have to research musicals for 1907 and George Gershwin 1923-24, do a bit of work on the full scores for JUBILEE, and print and bind a couple of scores. I think Ben Davis is stopping by on his way uptown, and then I hope to be home before 3:00.

When I get home, I'll work on my notes for next week's Trinity Church concert.

Color me happy!  ;)

This Monday, May 12, I have an appointment with a surgical oncologist (as if that weren't a specialty) who specializes in the intestines, to assess my ventral hernia which was the result of the surgery I had in January 2013 to treat my sepsis, to remove tumors as well as a piece of the intestine (at least that's what I seem to recall).  This surgeon has a very good pedigree, including a stint at The Cleveland Clinic.  I'm very hopeful that my abdomen will get back to flat, otherwise I will continue to look as if I'm in the first trimester and rolling over to my right side on my stomach will not be all that fun.

Topic of the DayWe'll Take a Glass Together from Grand Hotel. :D

I just came across this after going from link to link from the previous "Tap Your Troubles Away" link.  It's Kim Criswell singing "I Got Rhythm" on the 2009 BBC Proms.  I LOVE DR Elmore's close and personal friend, Kim Criswell!!

TOD:

Not that these are "happy" songs, but they always instill a mood that is good, particularly when I need an attitude adjustment:
MONA LISA sung by Nat King Cole
SOME ENCHANTED EVENING sung by Giorgio Tozzi (from the movie)
Both have a beautiful melancholy, poignant.  I'd rather be in a poignant mood than a bad one.

The theme to THE GOOD, THE BAD and THE UGLY, no matter if it's the original, or by Hugo Montenegro, or whomever else covered it, always chases my doldrums away.

Okay, here's the THING I said I'd post.

A few years ago, probably when I was replacing my long lost vocal score, I found this LP listed on eBay...

Hoping against hope that it would be at least INTERESTING, I spent the five bucks or whatever, and:

Oh Lordy.    ::)

It's the songs, extracted from these kids' performance, but said performance is well nigh indescribable.  It's accompanied by piano, and nothing about it much resembles LI'L ABNER as we know it.  Or as anyone ever knew it.  Everything is dumbed down, as if for first graders or some such.  Rhythms, forget it.  The piano is playing something nearly unrecognizable.  Ordinarily, about something like this, I'd say it's a hoot.  But it's almost impossible to listen to even one song straight through.

Note this doesn't say "Naples HIGH SCHOOL Music Department".  Who knows what the hell it was.

Hope you can read the record labels, since even with something like this I'm not going to mistreat a piece of vinyl by laying it directly on the scanner.  I think you can make them larger by clicking on them.

I haven't yet devised whatever my method is going to be to record LP to MP3 (I know I can, I just have to get things together and figure it out), but maybe someday soon I'll be able to treat HHW to a couple of tunes.

But boy, how I remember the Century Records label.  They did all the recordings for our schools in Fort Lauderdale.  And that's another project waiting to be tackled -- salvaging what I can from the half dozen or so of my own high school records.
