TOD:

The Warren Beatty/Buck Henry remake of HERE COMES MR. JORDAN as HEAVEN CAN WAIT is pretty good, mostly, but unfortunately has too many dated references.

And the other one I expected to be mentioned :)

The 2001 further remake, DOWN TO EARTH, was not well-received.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Down_to_Earth_(2001_film)

The only thing that's funny in this remake is the hilarious boy toy version of "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going." Too easy, but still funny.

Jane, it's not Mexican, more Southwestern, but I made a big pot of carne adovada today. It has to set overnight before I can cook it, but I'm putting my two days of working from home to use.

You wouldn't like the carne part of it, but the deep chile sauce is wonderful. I could see serving it over breaded eggplant.

I agree with most of the remakes mentioned so far, especially 3:10 to Yuma (dreadful), the first remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Nosferatu (both great).

I hated the recent TV remake of A Room with a View.

I probably won't see Spielberg's remake of West Side Story.

Dan, I truly hope you find someone who listens and can help you find a solution. Hang in there. You've come this far; don't give up hope now. (Easy for me to say.)

Thanks, but to keep things clear, my health insurance was suspended/terminated due to my inability to make premium payments.  As a retiree of the state (the classification I fall under due to extended medical/disability status), I received a continuation of benefits, sort of a retiree COBRA.  However, I don't get all that much through SS Disability, so it's either pay for food or pay for the premium, and all the other bills.  I "make" almost $100 over the cut-off for the Medicaid equivalent.  I may not even be able to pay for the Obamacare equivalent.  It certainly won't have all of the coverage I would have otherwise.  The co-payments and deductibles are much higher.

Right now, I have a couple of people at the local Cancer Center looking into things.  There's nothing for me to do right now except making up my mind not to get upset.  From my research the past day, I believe the proverbial fix is in with the government take-over.  The "overhaul" of the medical insurance system is not changing the cost of coverage, it is merely taking us all into a single-payer system, which sounds good but really isn't.  Why else would such a Rube Goldbergian scheme be subsumed into the IRS and not the HHS?  There's nothing medical or even affordable about the ACA/Obamacare.  At least the insurance companies hire RNs to review cases.  Granted, the insurance companies are in business to make money, but the IRS hired more accountants and auditors.  There's nothing medical about that.

I may sound heretical and particularly if I were in Hollywood, but I never have and never will trust any politician, especially if they say that they are there to help.  They are there to help themselves.  Why else do they stay there for a lifetime and come out in the end multi-millionaires suckling at the public trough?  Never was it envisioned at the founding to have "professional" "lifetime" politicians who have never worked in the real world and have about as much in common with the work-a-day citizen as Queen Elizabeth has with the commoner.  They have elevated themselves into the "royalty" of this country.  I mean, what do we have to look forward to another Bush and another Clinton?  What are we in dynastic China?  (Maybe we are, after all China "owns" us anyway.)  That's the best we can get?  They are all in it for themselves and their cronies and their patrons, not for the average schmoe.  I agree with Chomsky that there aren't two major parties, just one.  Both want to get us to a one-world government, one slower and one faster, but the end-point is the same.

TOD:  The Musical.     woops, no!   The Addendum.

I suppose we can be grateful that, for the time being, a threatened remake of MY FAIR LADY has been taken off the table.

DR Dan M posted some great examples of both good and bad remakes.  I especially want to laud Herzog's NOSFERATU for being as much a masterpiece as Murnau's.

It's funny about certain horror stories or themes ..... sometimes there can never be enough great versions of them.  Isn't that kind of wonderful?  I think it is.

TOD:

And I know I will get flak for this as there are some who are absolutely in love with Harry Connick (don't count me in that group, please), but the remake he made of SOUTH PACIFIC was not good in my book.  You cannot improve on the original movie cast if you're remaking it as a movie.

You are not alone in your dislike of the remake of SOUTH PACIFIC.  I didn't hate it, but I didn't really like it.

I don't know much about movies. But I do wish someone would remake Guys and Dolls. It was such a fun musical, but I found the movie quite dull.

Also, someone please remake Man of La Mancha.

ALSO coincidentally and also according to Playbill.com's Schedule of Upcoming Movie Musical Adaptations, under IN DEVELOPMENT:

Quote
GUYS AND DOLLS
• Production Company: 20th Century Fox
• Screenplay: Danny Strong
• Director: TBA
• Cast: Channing Tatum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt
• A new film adaptation of Frank Loesser, Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling's Tony Award-winning musical.

I hated the recent TV remake of A Room with a View.

The original Merchant/Ivory version of "A Room With a View" is one of my sister's favorite movies...and she, too, HATED the TV remake.  That's the only DVD version that was being sold in the lobby at the 5th Avenue theater when we went to see the musical version last weekend, which I really liked!

I have eaten too much of the goodies I served for my book group discussion.  The almond macaroons I baked are delicious.  The sour cream cake was also good.  I'm disappointed that my rose cake pan kept some of the rose petals when I tipped the cake out.

I have the leftovers in the freezer as they both freeze well.  The sour cream cake might even taste better frozen.

DR Dan,
I'm so sorry about what you are going through.  If anyone thought Obamacare was going to be anything like the socialized medicine in other countries where it actually works, they were sorely mistaken.  It was only intended to increase the number of people for whom insurance is available not to make premiums affordable for anyone.    That's exactly what the proponents of the bill said before it passed.

When I went to the Obama care website I learned that according to the government because I am self employed with one employee, I am not an individual and can't qualify for any individual Obamacare plan regardless of income.

Sheesh!  I am becoming more of a libertarian every day.

Well, it's a little early, but I'm going to leave work.  I've had a little gastro-intestinal distress (fortunately, very little), so I'm going home.  I have to do some shopping first, though.  I'm sure I won't have anymore "trouble," but I don't want to chance it. ;)

Be back later!

TOD:

Another of the many horrible remakes that were made mainly out of lack of creativity and fulfilling some kind of package deal was yet another terrible Nicolas Cage flick, THE WICKER MAN.  The original, with Edward Woodward, Britt Ekland and the always awesome Christopher Lee, is so far above the remade dreck, I cannot even say, except that it set a mood and put the viewer in a totally unfamiliar place which slowly unfolded.  Not the remake.  You knew right away that the makers of that train wreck didn't trust that the audience would have any intelligence.

The remake of THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR was very inert and Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo did not have the chemistry that Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway had.  It wasn't a horrible remake, but it was very, very unnecessary.

The makers of the updated version of THE TIME MACHINE forgot that CGI is no improvement over the stop-motion animation of the original.  Just because technology has advanced it doesn't also mean that the charm will magically appear.  The newer movie lacked charm.

The Jonathan Demme remake of CHARADE is highly unnecessary as you cannot ever improve upon the pairing of Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn, or even duplicate the rogue's gallery of great supporting actors like George Kennedy and James Coburn.  Or, the one and only Walter Matthau.
