That awful remake of Stanley Donen's BEDAZZLED, which itself is a minor classic of sorts, starring Brendan Fraser, who has sort-of disappeared. The Donen original had Dudley Moore, Peter Cook, Raquel Welch and Dame Edna in her guise as Barry Humphries. [Lots of cheers and applause.] The remake had Brendan Fraser. [The silence is deafening.]

The original WINGS OF DESIRE by Wim Wenders was great, original and witty, and had Peter Falk as a former angel. So, what's not to love? The remake, I tells ya, with that never-can-tell-what'chya-gonna-get Nic Cage, called CITY OF ANGELS. Bleccch!

And I know I will get flak for this as there are some who are absolutely in love with Harry Connick (don't count me in that group, please), but the remake he made of SOUTH PACIFIC was not good in my book. You cannot improve on the original movie cast if you're remaking it as a movie.

That beneath contempt remake of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL with Keanu Reeves. WTF? It was made for the generation who think that Paul McCartney's first band was Wings and that Linda was a classically trained tambourine artiste.

The remake of THE DESPERATE HOURS was okay. Not great, but Mickey Rourke was still in his original face and was interesting, and to make it different, they dropped the "The".

I don't know much about movies. But I do wish someone would remake Guys and Dolls. It was such a fun musical, but I found the movie quite dull.

Also, someone please remake Man of La Mancha.

While I like Mitch Pileggi, his re-boot of IN SEARCH OF had none of the low-budget creepiness of the great Leonard Nimoy's Seventies classic. Not to mention, no Nimoy either.

Watch J. Lee Thompson's CAPE FEAR and compare it with Scorsese's version. Robert Mitchum was way better than De Niro. Scorsese couldn't even change the great Herrmann score which, unlike the Psycho remake, Elmer Bernstein lovingly presented it for an otherwise over-the-top remake. It was just trying too hard to be liked.

I did not care for the Robin Williams remake of THE ABSENT-MINDED PROFESSOR. In FLUBBER, he could not overcome the great Fred MacMurray's performance in the original.

I thought the remake of Lelouch's "La bonne année" by John Avildsen known as HAPPY NEW YEAR with the great Peter Falk and Charles Durning was quite good and did not embarrass the original at all.

OUTLAND was an interesting, but unneeded remake of "High Noon" and was, ultimately, not that great. For me, it was just a marker along the vast wasteland of Sean Connery's career between ZARDOZ and THE UNTOUCHABLES.

Speaking of Sean Connery and unneeded remakes, how about that remake of THUNDERBALL known as NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN. I'm a big Bond series fan, but this was not all that good. The cheesy music by Michel Legrand made the opening sequence seem like we were starting to watch an episode of Robin Leach's "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous". Unfortunately, the talents of director Irvin Kershner, and actors Klaus Maria Brandauer and Max von Sydow could not save Bond in this one. Also became an overplayed movie on independent TV channels before cable channels multiplied into the hundreds. It seemed to be on TV no matter what day or time or channel.

A well-done remake, a classic on its own terms, is Werner Herzog's NOSFERATU with Klaus Kinski in the role made famous by Max Schreck in Murnau's original of the same name. Genuinely (beautifully) creepy and artistic at the same time.

A two-fer of really bad remakes, at least that's in my estimation, all thanks to Tim Burton:
PLANET OF THE APES starring Marky Mark who was just as wooden as Heston but lacked the in-jokiness of the original; and,
WILLY WONKA starring Johnny Depp who was unable to balance the line between mysteriousness and creepiness, like Gene Wilder, and ultimately we wished to see Gene Wilder in his movie.

No matter how many ways THE PRODUCERS is remade, no one can match the great Zero Mostel, no one. The chemistry between Mostel and Gene Wilder was one-of-a-kind.

Good to hear! DR elmore, I used to work across the street in The Bank of New York building on the 37^th floor, and enjoyed going to the concerts at the Trinity Church. Those were nice "perks" for working in that area of Manhattan.
