I read RED GOLD over the weekend. Well done, Bruce! A lovely story. But where did you learn about guns? (I don't think that's a spoiler, as we all know that RED GOLD is a Western.)

DR Dan M, I concur with the suggestion (Kevin's, I think) to contact your Congressperson. I did that once when I was getting monthly dunning letters from the IRS, who obviously never read the letters I sent them. It's often the only way to break through the bureaucratic gridlock. It's also what they are paid to do.

As many of you already know, I share Vixmom's and Elmore's anger at our health care system. There is soooo much need for improvement! It really frosts me how so many people are treated, and then the callousness over the ineptitude. I believe that many people feel that those who don't have insurance or who are not working are in that situation due to their  own laziness or stupidity and are therefore not deserving of better treatment. I know of no other explanation for the VEHEMENCE I witness.

Dan, I truly hope you find someone who listens and can help you find a solution. Hang in there. You've come this far; don't give up hope now. (Easy for me to say.)

I'm with DR Laura on GUYS AND DOLLS. I loved the stage version at Bluth Brothers, but didn't care for the movie. I'd love to see JRand's G/D. Is that your new name for your version, Jack?

I've discovered the easy way to and from Trinity Church. We had a wonderful rehearsal today.

Good to hear!  DR elmore, I used to work across the street in The Bank of New York building on the 37th floor, and enjoyed going to the concerts at the Trinity Church.  Those were nice "perks" for working in that area of Manhattan.

It's a schlep from the Upper West Side; I discovered today if I bus to 72nd Street, take the subway elevator to the express, transfer at 14th Street to the local, get off at Rector Street, the only stairs I need to painfully navigate are those subway steps and i come out on Rector Street a short block from the Church.

After rehearsal Rob and i went to a Mexican place for a snack. It was very good. I've been craving Mexican food since August.

Speaking of health care, I saw my new UCLA doctor today. He's an osteopath--one of the few types of practitioners who really helps me--and he gave me a back treatment. As it costs me nothing to see him apart from $6 for parking, I cannot complain too much that his treatment is much shorter than the 45 minutes I usually receive when paying cash. I'm planning to still see my regular osteopath, even though I must pay out-of-pocket, but hope to see her less by seeing Dr C between visits. That's the plan, anyway. I'm hoping for few, if any, surprises.

I wish I could explain the logic.

I am watching a news report that a local farmer plays classical music for his cows and chickens....because they have less stress....and make better eatin'!

The cows were particularly taken with Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto in B Flat Minor.  The chickens seemed indifferent to the piece.

How he can eat them after this I can't imagine.  At least he does something to make their lives better.

The Coen Brothers' TRUE GRIT is a better overall movie than Henry Hathaway's original, but John Wayne was a better "Rooster" than Jeff Bridges.  Wayne's portrayal had humor.

After watching the remake we watched the original.  Wayne was much better.

Willamette University had their graduation ceremonies this weekend, so I am losing my Chinese neighbor in the apartment next door, and my Saudi Arabian neighbor who lives down the hall...not to mentions my Japanese neighbor who lives on either the 5th or 6th floor (I forget where, exactly).

I look forward to my potential new international neighbors.

Amazon Fresh is now in LA. I've not tried the service, but I really like the concept. Will they do a run to Trader Joe's for me? Bring me a meal from one of my favorite eateries? I'm happy to receive drone deliveries. Perhaps I should make a little dronipad out near the carport.  You know, big X so the drone knows where to land. "The veggie burrito is mine. These must be yours." We don't want people fighting over the deliveries. (You know how cranky people can get when they're hungry.)

Good day to all!

I'm just popping by to wish everyone a wonderful day. I've had a bit of a rough ride over the weekend, as it was my first Mother's Day without Mom. I'll be okay. I just didn't want to bring my grief in here at its height.

I'll be back and much perkier soon.

Cheers!  :)

I understand that.  Sometimes we just need time alone to grieve.

It appears that former New York actress turned California producer and director Nancy Malone had died in Duarte, California of Leukemia at age 79. She starred on the tv series THE NAKED CITY and the TV series THE LONG HOT SUMMER and she appeared on Broadway.

She is survived by good friend Linda Hope.

TOD:

THE MALTESE FALCON is probably the greatest of all remakes.  It was the 3rd filmed version of the novel.

John Carpenter's remake of THE THING is much better than the Howard Hawks original.

The Coen Brothers' TRUE GRIT is a better overall movie than Henry Hathaway's original, but John Wayne was a better "Rooster" than Jeff Bridges.  Wayne's portrayal had humor.

I hated the remake of 3:10 TO YUMA.  The original is a classic.

One should never remake a hit; only a flop.  Otherwise, you are competing with the memory of the first movie.

You'd think that someone would listen...but no, "they" seem to only remake the already good stuff.  At least, the rumored remake of "Casablanca" with Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez never happened. :o

What a nightmare that would have been.

An excellent English-language/American version of a Kurosawa classic that became a classic in its own right was THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN.

I have been watching to see if anyone mentioned this.

The Warren Beatty/Buck Henry remake of HERE COMES MR. JORDAN as HEAVEN CAN WAIT is pretty good, mostly, but unfortunately has too many dated references.

And the other one I expected to be mentioned :)

The 2001 further remake, DOWN TO EARTH, was not well-received.
