In the latest issue of The Sondheim Review (which just arrived today), there is an article/interview with Mary Rodgers, about her friendship/acquaintance with him.

There was a restaurant that opened in Tacoma in the mid-Seventies called Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker, but everyone called it the BBC. They opened three of four other restaurants around the Northwest in the next couple of years, all but one of them called BBC. The food was wonderful and the service was good. The prices were pretty reasonable for the times. They had a great steak and lobster.

After ten years they all folded, except for the sister reaturant with the different name. It is still open today, although under different owners. In fact, George and his family went there the other day for the anniversary dinner. It is called Falls Terrace.

I think ROBERTA's going to be good. After listening a couple of times to it today, I credit the HHW vibes and support for it and the ceiling repair for taking what was okay, maybe a little more than passable, after May's mix to something really special. I'm very grateful.

I loved the production of PIRATES when it went to Broadway. I think it had the same cast.

The Berkshire Record Outlet was selling the DVD of the park production, not the movie, for $4.99. That's the one with Patricia Routledge instead of Angela Lansbury. BerkshireRecordOutlet.com.

I thought it was Estelle Parsons on Broadway?

It was Estelle Parsons on Broadway. Routledge chose to return to London. I gather she was not happy doing the production.

Patricia Routledge did appear in a TV (?) version of the production as it appeared in Central Park (not to be confused with the full-blown movie version where Angela Lansbury performed the role).

Often one of the owners just get too old or have been ill. Sometimes they just want to retire.

Have you noticed that it's often the better eateries that close, while the rather mediocre chains survive? One reason may be that the chains are well-capitalized. They also have the advantage of being better known, and thus, predictable. If you agree that the better eateries generally use better ingredients, which tend to be more expensive, then they're more at risk when commodity prices rise.

I remember when we first became vegetarian's the Hamlets were one of a few places that had a good veggie sandwich.

Actually, their demise has been rather slow. I really hope that the new owners breathe the proverbial new life into the restaurant.
