I am home from NYMF. Kevin Spirtas was wonderful, as were the rest of the cast. I liked the show.

Just talked to the family. All but me are in Louisville this weekend, which is good because it will help Mom and Dad overlook the car situation. Apparently, Dad's ready to go get a car on Monday. He doesn't want to deal with anyone on Craigslist, though, and he's been saving up for the purchase, so it looks like a new used car is in their future.

He has his eye on a Camry or a Honda of some sort. Nice.

Found one of my favorites (and one of Elmore's least favorite) at Half-Price Books today at a great price: The Aldous Huxley version of Pride and Prejudice with Garson and Olivier. Hope I can find the time to watch it this week.

Nice to know he wanted a new car :)

Are they still feeling good?

and I was  delighted to get  street parking  right next to the building I was going to -  which (if you are at all familiar with Brooklyn streets)  was a little miracle  all on its own

Yesterday I tried a Mexican restaurant which I've driven past a gazillion times. When I lived in Santa Monica in the 1970s it was called Giberto's. Now it's called Gilbert's, but I believe it's the same owners. Sorry to say it was mediocre. So many eateries around, but so few I wish to frequent.

So today I took a Taco Walk to the little Mexican dive nearby. It's not great, but it's consistently not bad and always clean.

On the way home I stopped at a neighbor's yard sale. Lots of clothes and books. The books were free. I was told that even the charities won't take books any longer because they can't sell them. That is horrible! I saw none I wanted, even at such an attractive price.

And not a parrot in sight! I must have unimaginative neighbors.

TOD:

Growing up, all I knew were Saltines. I remember how great I thought Ritz were the first time I tried them. In my twenties I discovered Wheat Thins and loved them. Since then I've been a fan of Stoned Wheat Thins, Ak-mak, and now Dr Kracker Seeded Spelt and Seedlander. I don't think Dr Kracker makes any gluten-free crackers, but if you like a hearty cracker, these are quite good. A Texas company, IIRC.

DR John G, I was surprised how much the Audi dealer was willing to negotiate, even on a used car. The salesman told me later that $300-500 is common for them. I hope your parents get a good deal.

I found cargurus.com a useful site. They have listings for local areas and rate them as to value--"great bargain," "good deal," "overpriced," etc. It gave me a good perspective before setting foot at the dealers.

Speaking of Mexican restaurants...

Here's an Ask BK or DR Jeanne or Jane or whoever...

I was recently reminded of a Mexican restaurant in Santa Monica which, as I recall, was in an unusual location, being on an upper floor of some building -- but I have no idea what the building was, or what the restaurant was called.  I think it was in Santa Monica, not far from the ocean, but I suppose it could have been farther inland in West L.A.  Which doesn't help narrow it down any.  This was in the late '70s or thereabouts.  Does that ring a bell with anyone?

I don't recall any upstairs Mexican restaurants in Santa Monica.  For the most part when I think of Santa Monica back then I think of the beach and the pier.

On my way home I stopped at the Little Pie Company.

PBS is interviewing Garrison Keillor this evening. I am not a fan. I have this memory that when he had the program in Manhattan in the late 1980s he was not particularly kind to my friend Russell.

DR Jane, I didn't state that correctly.  This restaurant would have been in a building several stories tall, accessed by elevator, and most likely with a view of the city.  Now it's bugging me -- I've got to figure this out.

I don't recall any upstairs Mexican jernts either, not in Santa Monica.  In fact, I don't know that I've ever eaten at a Mexican Jernt in Santa Monica other than the westside version of El Cholo.

Stopping by to say hello, send vibes, and solve the mystery.
Toppers was the Mexican restaurant on the top floor of The Huntley Hotel in Santa Monica.
Loved that place.
Have a great weekend, everyone!
