I think Fig Newtons were as much a staple in our house as Saltines and Ritz and Graham Crackers.  And though I would eat all of these, even binge on them at times, I was never, shall we say, "passionate" about any of them.  It has now been many years since I've had a Fig Newton, and I never tried any of the alternate versions.  In fact, I'm not sure I even knew about them.

I have tried and disliked the alternate versions.  The original were one of my favorite store bought cookies.

Jane, have you ever had Newman's Own Origanics' Fig Newmans?  They're quite delish and are available in Fat Free, Low Fat and Wheat-Free/Dairy-Free varieties.  My sister loves these.

I haven't tried them.  When I did buy Fig Newtons I usually just got the little packs of 2 cookies, otherwise I would eat the entire bag.

Actually, found online something called Five Women Wearing the Same Dress - have them check that out.

A local theater group did this show last year.  I didn't get to see it, but I'd heard that it was very good.

That, of course, is a separate issue. ;)

And I am home from lunch with my friend Ray Sheen. I am now an authority on one more Manhattan restaurant craze, the latest of which just opened a block from me:
http://themeatballshop.com

It looks like a cute place.  They did to improve the quality of the menu on their website.  It was blurry and difficult for me to read even when I enlarged it.  I think I saw veggie meatballs.

From DR Cilla:
Quote
You know, that's a funny thing.  I've always used Edith to translate and she laughed at me when I told her I could speak Spanish.

Maybe she wanted you to think you needed her.

That is great you can call your brother's assistant if you need to.   Hospitals use a service they can call for a translator.  I wonder if you can also do that on a need to use basis.

Yes but it's very expensive. I'm not as good as I think I am, lol.  Today a cook from Kentucky Fried came into my office, when I couldn't understand everything he was saying he gave me a lecture about how important it is for me to have someone there who speaks Spanish. I understood all of that, lol

I did spend about 1 hour on the phone with someone I REALLY wanted as a reference.  She said yes and gave me some very good advice.  Now I just need one or two more references and I'll be ready to send in my application  The reference is a real ground breaker for females in the legal field in Iowa.

This is exciting.

Locking your door, very clever :)

DR Jennifer, thank you for posting those Kindle mysteries that were on sale at Amazon for $1.99.  I purchased THE TITANIC MURDERS.  It was a very clever story using real mystery writer Jacques Futrelle (who actually died onboard the Titanic) as the writer who is drawn by Captain Smith and Bruce Ismay into solving a real murder on the ship's maiden voyage.  I bought a second book by the same author titled THE LUSITANIA MURDERS.  I am not sure how that one is going to work.

One looked interesting to me.  I would have purchased it even I had remembered to do so before 1:00 in the morning, after the offer expired. ;D

First the bad news: There is a leak by the washing machine.

Now the good news: There is a tiny crack in the bottom of the detergent bottle. A mess to clean up, but cheaper than a visit from the plumber!

It's about F.Scott Fitzgerald affair with Sheila Graham.

I rated it 8/10

We lived somewhat close to the Nabisco Factory in New Jersey.  I had to be driving on the freeway to pass it and every time I craved 'Nilla Wafers, which is what the air around the factory smelled like.

It is about the time I began buying smaller sizes of cookies.  Unfortunately they don't make 'nilla wafers in snack packs.

Dogville is three hours of my life that I want back. I really did not like it at all.

Love Bogie, Bacall and Hoagy Carmichael in "To Have and Have Not."

I saw Doubt on the stage in a bad production and the film.  I liked the film okay - not my favorite play and not a film I'd ever need to revisit.

We have wind, rain, and thunder.  It would be great if we had another storm like last night.  We picked the perfect movie to watch to go with the hard rain last night, Noah.

After the rain stopped we had a beautiful panoramic sunset.  We went outside for awhile to enjoy the views.  Even the dried up lawn was a lovely color of gold.

And then we came back inside to finish watching Noah.

I am not sure if I would know if a movie I was watching was being shown in the incorrect ratio. Or would I?

How does one even know what the correct ratio is just by looking?

Ration sounds too much like math, so therefore it is over my head.

Hey, Mikey!  Visit The Widescreen Museum where you can see pictures that differentiate between proper ratio and pan-and-scan, etc.

It's very illuminating.

What I don't like is when movies are released on DVD/Blu-ray and they "simulate" the curved screen and the picture is distorted!  I hate that.  The specific example that I watched was a documentary that I got from the library called "Windjammer."  If they have to "simulate" the curved screen, why can't they have the option to view it in its undistorted widescreen, also?  "How the West Was Won" had both versions in its Blu-ray release.

Here's an image from "Windjammer":

Just my 2¢.

Well that's tricky because the curved screen was the way Windjammer was originally shown, as well as all the true Cinerama films - they were shot specifically to be shown that way.

Okay, maybe "hate" is too strong a word...but that kind of distortion tends to annoy me.  Granted, I'm not used to seeing those kinds of movies, so that could also be part of the problem.

Well that's tricky because the curved screen was the way Windjammer was originally shown, as well as all the true Cinerama films - they were shot specifically to be shown that way.

But were the three side-by-side frames of the film actually different sizes, or were they just perceived to be different because the sides were curved closer to the audiences?  If they're actually the same size, why not have the non-smile widescreen as an option?  Here are two screen-captured images from the "How the West Was Won" Blu-ray, and in the "smile" version, the sides (to me) look distorted, but the regular widescreen image looks fine:

My only comment is that I keep meaning to watch THE ENCHANTED COTTAGE every time it plays on TCM...and still I have not seen it.

If you end up liking it do report back. Perhaps that will encourage me to remember to record it next time!

I forgot to mention that I watched TEN LITTLE INDIANS over the weekend and completely enjoyed it! That makes three filmed versions of that story that I have watched and loved.

What I also loved was the soundtrack! So mod 60s! It made me want to watch PANIC IN YEAR ZERO just to hear that film's soundtrack again (although I have it on cd). So I did.

I'm trying to decide if I'll go to the baseball game tonight.  The weather is great.  But, I'm thinking I may go back the office for a couple hours and get some more done when it's quiet and the phone isn't ringing.   I got more done today than I thought I would, but it's a bit overwhelming. Both the mailman and the Spanish language newspaper editor are sending me people who are looking for a job.  I'm not ready to deal with it yet, but if the right person walks in the door I won't say no
