I get to sit through another mind-numbing board meeting this afternoon. Isn't that exciting?

Might I just ask where in tarnation IS everyone?  These days lately are baffling to me.  Everyone must be on vacation and yet, as far as I've heard, summer is over, baby, so what in tarnation IS going on?  It is most unseemly and may just be cause for a bitch-slapping or two.  Or three.

I feel as if I should never have suggested we break with tradition and eat anyplace other than Joe Allen’s.   ;D

Ben I really appreciate your efforts in organizing this.  I just had a thought, wherever we eat, you should feel comfortable the restaurant will be sure to get you out on time.  I’m guessing Joe Allen’s is the safest bet, and the menu does look tempting.

I shall soon be on my way to the theater, having done my big shopping at Gelson's.  It's funny, but as big as the shopping was it doesn't look like all that much stuff when I put it in the fridge and the cupboards.

I'd say keep the home fries burning but there isn't anyone here to read it.  Skammen.

Hmmm, maybe I will just call Mr. Allen's and make a reservation. Right now it sounds like me, Jane, Noel, Penny, Larry and possibly Jose which is 6. Let me know anyone if you want to join us. I'll make the reservation in the next few days. This way we continue Tradition (a Fiddler reference) and I'm just a few blocks from my ultimate destination of Playwrights Horizons. If we sup at or around 5pm, I'm sure I'll be out with enough time to make a 7:30 curtain at 42nd Street and 9th Avenue (Joe Allen's is on 46th between 8th and 9th on Restaurant Row).

I must report that I also had a disappointing evening in the theatre last night. I went to a mainstage production at Playwrights (the show I'm seeing on the 6th is a studio production in the smaller space). It's the opening show of the new season. Much of the audience loved it, in fact the man sitting next to me said to his wife, "this is one of the best things I've seen here in a long time", which made me think "what am I not getting?" There are some good actors in the piece but I found it trite and condescending and the characters were more caricature than character. It was a standard issue plot (conflict in a small semi-rural Midwestern town) and I don't know why the author thought she was saying somthing new or interesting. Judging from audience reaction, it was certainly well enjoyed by many people and it may be a success for Playwrights but I left slightly bewildered at the difference between my feeling and the rest of the audience. But then, much of popular culture soars right over my head, so as I reminded myself of that, by the time I got home (having stopped at the Deli to buy the Sunday New York Times, a carton of milk and some chocolate chip cookies) I felt better.

I went to the Broadway Cares Flea Market today and had, as always, a very good time. I saw friends working the various tables and chatted with each for a few minutes (the fair was busy early so they didn't have lots of time to chat). No major star sitings, though I did meet an old friend from too many years ago to remember who has just gone into Phantom and we chatted for a bit. The only celebrity I saw was Stephanie D'Abruzzo from Avenue Q. She was posing for pictures with puppets. I passed by the Star Signing table (the line was enormous so I decided not to join it) and saw Richard Thomas, Leslie Gore, and Bebe Neuwirth all signing and posing madly with their legions of fans. I did purchase some CDs for a bargain. I got "An Evening with Dorothy Fields" It's taken from the Lyrics and Lyricists Series held at the 92nd Street YM-YWHA in NYC. It was taped in 1972 and pressed to CD in 1998. I also got a copy of "A Stephen Sondheim Evening". I have it on tape but had not yet found it at an affordable price on CD. Here it was for $7! I also got "Melodies of Jerome Kern" It's part of a series called The Walden Sessions. They were done in the 50s and featured songs and songwriters from the American Popular Songbook. This particular session took place in 1955 and features David Daniels, June Ericson, Warren Galjour, Jay Harnick and Christina Lind. It has Guy Haine's theme song, "Pick Yourself Up". My most exciting purchase (for me, anyway) was a copy of "What Makes Sammy Run?" I got it for $5 because it had no booklet. Similar to my purchase of Golden Rainbow a couple of weeks ago. The list price for WMSR is $25 from the Steve and Eydie Web site. I'm very happy with my little find.

It's a beautiful early fall afternoon here in NYC so I will go out and enjoy more of it while I can.

To quote a soon to be returning East Coaster (don't put a drink on him though)

Laters!

Happy Birthday, DR Elmore!

Very beautiful, pleasant fall day around here (except it isn't quite fall yet). I'm sure we're not done with summer temperatures yet, but I'm going to enjoy these cool days and nights while I can.

I like quite a few songs in WHAT MAKES SAMMY RUN. I am sorry I never got to see the show because the cast album sounds terrific in lots of places.

Gee, looks like I've landed amongst the Gods of HHW.  That's what I get for still being a Newbie after all these years!

Has anyone been having problems with the Windows XP service pack 2?  What a pain in my neck!  I must have installed and then unistalled the program four times....

Jennifer -- I'm so glad you're still out there.  I'm off once again to visit the family in Montreal at the end of October.  But can't seem to find much entertainment in the Gazette.  The Broadway Review at the Casino du Montreal looks like fun.  Have any suggestions?

Ah, gotta get back to the laundry!

Earnest was ghastly.  I left at the interval, something I do very rarely.
Were the costumes that bad?

There was an all-male version of EARNEST staged in New York this summer. A casual friend of mine directed it, but it was still in rehearsal when I was there in July and didn't get to see it.

Sorry I can't linger longer, but I have to practice the music for SOMETHING'S AFOOT before I show up for rehearsal tonight. I haven't worked on it nearly enough, and it takes work to learn these tricky tempos and tongue-twisting lyrics.

The meds still have me knocked for a loop, although happily.  It's nice to be breathing again.

And the sun is shining, and everything is lovely and green outside.  Except for the sky, which is blue.

Another quiet Sunday.

Maybe we'll get a marathon running during the Emmys.

I know the Saideye Bronfman is doing Man Of La Mancha from october 10th (not sure till when).  And the Centaur is doing Anna and the tropics in Oct/Nov.  I already have my tix for the former.

Not sure what the Casino is doing, so I can't comment on that.  If you email me I will try to let you know if anything else comes up.

Whoa! What happened?! Is the poster office on strike?
...I'm back from the Farmers Market where I had my usual adventures.  Ran into some friends I hadn't seen for 9 years who actually live on bk's old street. We've never been able to get together all the time I've been back here. So while at the Market, I discovered that I was in need of money (so handy to have when buying things!) and walked over to the ATM of my bank a few blocks away. And who is standing at the ATM, but my friends! They're going to the Emmys tonight, BTW.

Happy Birthday DR Elmore!

Btw, I am looking forward to the Emmys.

Bruce, re: that critic on the cast recording group.

I don't know who he is or if he has anything personal against you.  But it's very hard to be objective when the person is talking about you.  I know it's hard for me (and I believe others here) to not get mad if anyone talks bad about anyone on HHW.

Yes some of his facts were wrong.  And yes he was very harsh.  But to me at least it came across that he just didn't like the show.  Not that he hated you.  He did compliment you though didn't he?

I think he could have been nicer about his feelings.  ANd a public forum probably wasn't the place to be so harsh.  But I didn't get the impression that he was being cruel just for the sake of doing so.

Maybe I"m wrong, because I don't know the history of this.

Anyhow if anyone wants to read it, email me, and I"ll foward it to you.

This will be the first Emmys I've missed live (on TV) in many years. Can't be helped, of course, but I suspect once I get home, I'll watch the recorded portions on the DVR until I catch up with the progress of the show at that point.

I suspect it will be in high definition since ABC did the Oscars for the last two years in high def. If that's the case, I may have to watch when I get home and then go back and catch up with the recording when the show goes off.

ANGELS in AMERICA has the chance to win 11 awards overall. It already won in four craft categories last Sunday. Tonight, it's possible that it will win all four performance awards, best miniseries, best director, and best screenplay.

I think a couple of shows are tied with winning a record 9: ROOTS, ELEANOR AND FRANKLIN, possibly THE WINDS OF WAR. Tonight's results should be interesting.

I'm here, but I'm watching some things on TV.  There were a couple of shows about "Star Wars" on today, one on VH1 and the other on A&E.  TVGuide.com says that the A&E show, which started at 11:00 a.m., was 120 minutes, except that it didn't end at 1:00 p.m.  It went all the way to 2:00.  Darn.  I missed the last hour, because I was watching my tape of the VH1 show.  Fortunately, both will be on again and maybe my sister's boyfriend can record them to DVD...if he doesn't have anything else taping at those times.  Isn't that exciting?  Isn't that just too too?  Or not. ::)

Anyway, what I'm about to do now is vacuum my house.  I bought a brand new Eureka vacuum about a month ago on Amazon.com (with the normal Amazon discount and the gold box discount and free shipping, this $189.99 vacuum only cost $82.91!) but I haven't used it at all, yet.  Now I must!  I have to at least find out if the darn thing turns on, so that's what I'm going to do.  Wish me luck.  I am the King of Procrastinators! ;D

I bought a copy of WHAT MAKES SAMMY RUN at a garage sale last weekend. I didn't know until now that I'd scored a treasure! And here's the bonus... I just now opened it and found a yellowing letter inside from "Columbia Records Sales Corp."... So it must have been a reviewers copy. The album was from the collection of the actor Wiliam Daniels - So maybe he was a DJ back when?
Here's the letter:

"TO ALL RADIO STATION PERSONNEL

We suggest that you audition Side 2, band 2 "Kiss Me No Kisses" by Sally Ann Howes and Side 2, band 6, "The Friendliest Thing" by Bernice Massi prior to programming."

...Interesting, no?

Well, those tracks contain either profanity or suggestive behavior that I guess some radio listeners might have found offensive.

I'll never forget playing the cast recording of MY FAIR LADY for the first time after I saw the show (as a kid of 8 or 9). When Rex Harrison started booming out, "Damn, Damn, Damn, Damn - I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face," my dad came running to my bedroom and said, "What kind of records are you buying anyway?"

Someone here was commenting the other day about the dearth of excellent theater posters these days. In today's LA Times there was an insert for the upcoming season of the Geffen Playhouse. Each of the plays had a full page poster by Paul Davis. And they're just wonderful!
