Here is a picture of my Christmas present, a beautiful "eco-friendly" watch. It needs no battery as long as it's exposed to light, natural or artificial. I love it.

Very, very nice!

I like the idea of a watch that doesn't need a battery.  I have multiple watches that usually sit in a drawer and would lose a charge without light faster than they run out of battery power.

MR BK did you read what I posted the other day.....although you may know this already.

When he was vaudeville before he got into the movies, Jack Carson had an act with a partner.....none other than Dave Willock.

It very well could be, DR Jane. I got it from a web article entitled "18 cats and dogs that ruined Christmas."       :)

I am home from INTO THE WOODS, a show I really dislike.  I still remember from the original production that stupid moment where the dead giant, looking much like a 20-foot bowling ball in a wig, toppled over and I thought, bad finish to a second-rate Sondheim show.  Thanks to the cult, he's believed only to have produced works of monumental genius, but I still think INTO THE WOODS is a second- or third-tier one.  I still have no idea what the hell that idiotic number "The Last Midnight" is all about.  It's a dud, one of the worst things ever penned by the deified Sondheim. so of course i'm going to hell, but "Giants In The Sky." "The steps of the Palace," "Agony," and other numbers in the show are quite wonderful.

That said, I loved the movie, which is a big improvement over the stage show; it's not nearly as noisy, and the second act body count is lower. To me, the two halves still mesh badly, but the cast is really fine, and James Corden, whom I loved in ONE MAN, TWO GUV'NORS, is really wonderful.  I never felt that Chip Zien and Joanna Gleason felt part of the Grimm locale; they were far too urban New York Jew; it was hard to believe he's Rapunzel's brother.  Corden and Emily Blunt seem to be living in the same vicinity as Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, and the others. Speaking of the rest of the cast, I loved the boy who played Jack, Tracey Ulman as his mother, and the Red Riding Hood.  I'm on the fence about Anna Kendrick, but I thought the princes were both great, and came off nicer than they did in the stage show.  It's not a pleasant show; the authors are very mean to their characters in Act Two

"Agony" got a big round of applause from the audience.  I liked the costume and set design very much, and the musical adaptation is quite wonderful.  i think giving Tunick more than 12-15 instruments to write for gave the score a lot of enchantment missing from the stage show, and I was moved at the end.

I still think "The Last Midnight" is complete dreck.

Greetings one and all!  Thank you for the kind words about my pathetic poetic attempt last night.  Fred has nothing to worry about being skipped over as poet laureate of HHW.  I started out naming a couple of names, but immediately realized the deep hole I was  digging for myself, so I made a rapid about-face.

Bruce's Christmas do was so much fun! The spaghetti, tuna pasta salad and wacky noodles were all very yummilicous. I ate waaaaay to much and was trying to digest before having some peanut butter pie when Mark told me it was all gone. Really? I was surprised because I think only about half of it was eaten last year. That's okay - I didn't need it. I was just relieved when Mark told me that Bruce managed to snag the very last slice. Someone brought some really wonderful chocolate mint cookies and I snuck one out and took it home.
There was extra piano-playing and singing this year, and it seemed everyone was playing songs I'd never heard before - true to the Kritzerland theme. It's always good to hear new songs and there was one in particular that Shelly did that I really liked because it had such clever lyrics. Several folks were making requests and both Richard and Shelly said they couldn't possibly remember enough of those songs to perform them, but then they would tell a story about the song and I guess while they were talking, the cob webs would sort of clear and like real troopers they would sit down and start playing and singing would get through about half of some song they hadn't sung in over ten years, and I was just so impressed they could remember half of it. And I was extra impressed they had the nerve to try. It was lovely to hear Adryan Russ sing as I have never heard her before and she sang a song she had written herself that was quite beautiful. Then, the badgering for Sami to sing began and she repeatedly said "no, no, no, I don't want to" and she was still saying "no" while she was standing up and walking over to the piano. She brought down the house with "Annie" which got quite a few laughs as if some folks in the room had never heard it. We're looking forward to hearing the new song at the next Krizterland show. Bruce didn't want to play it for everyone at the party because he said it wasn't ready for "public consumption", and well...you know...he's shy. ;-)

Thanks, elmore, for your review of "Into the Woods". I've always thought it was weird the way Act II turns into such a blood bath. Mark surprised me and took me to a live performance of it a few weeks ago in Beverly Hills. I kept warning him that it all goes down hill after intermission (he didn't remember), and he kept saying we could leave, but of course we stayed, ha! We saw it at the Ahmanson years ago and since they had a decent budget, they did wonderful costuming with Milky the cow, who added a lot of humor to the show. But if you think about it, almost all Sondheim shows have yucky plots - "Sweeny Todd", "Company" (really no plot at all there), "Sunday in the Park with George", for examples. I guess "A Little Night Music" comes close to a decent story. When I saw "Sunday in the Park..." the director of the theater had to come out at intermission and urge everyone not to leave. I figure you just don't see a Sondheim show for the story - you see it for the music and amazing lyrics and just tolerate the rest.
