TOD: We'uns in Texas use the word barbecue to refer strictly to smoked meat. The rest is grilling or a cook-out.
That said, I like an old-fashioned style T-bone on the grill, thin and slathered with some Heinz 57 sauce. Brings back some great childhood memories. Brats on the grill are also great. Gotta have some salads with that, including potato and a green salad, coleslaw or macaroni, you name it. Love watermelon in that mix, too.
As for barbecue, give me beef ribs, pork ribs, brisket, sausage, just about anything but chicken. Very few people know how to smoke chicken properly, so they oversmoke it and the meat tastes like licking an ashtray.
