Since I'd been writing lyrics in the NY Times reader-comment section for so long, the Times asked me to write a "parody lyric" on the subject of the ArtsBeat column coming to an end after all these years.

It's at this link, actually part of the article this time and not in the comments; you just have to scroll down a bit:

Very nice :)

Thanks so much, Jane!

I'm watching the first broadcast episode on the new Star Trek DVD set that I got.  It was released last year, but the 20 minute bonus segment about redoing the special effects was copyrighted in 2007.  That doesn't make sense...unless it's taken them that long to get it all done, which I don't think is what happened.

Are you refering to the original television series? If so this is a reissue. The show was already released sometime ago by season. I have them on Blu Ray and there is a lot of bonus material. You can watch the shows with original or the enhance special effects.

Ahh...I didn't realize that it a reissue.  Makes sense, then.  I noticed that the Blu-ray is going to be re-released, too.

That's great, Fred!  Both the parody and the recognition! :D

Mail came late at work yesterday.  I was already gone when it arrived.

And what awaited me upon my arrival this morning?

One treasure that I found over the weekend on eBay -- a treasure, a small treasure, for me.

It's the program for the 1943 return engagement production of "Blithe Spirit" (at the Morosco Theater) starring Clifton Webb, Peggy Wood, Mildred Natwick and Haila Stoddard.  Each performer has a full portrait page and each has signed beneath his/her respective portraits.  In addition, three of the supporting players have autographed beside their biographical sketches -- Valerie Cossart, Doreen Lang and Philip Tonge.

It's in remarkably good condition (some of the inner pages are loose, but intact) and, at one time, someone had folded the program lengthwise.

I'm thrilled to have this.

Congrats on the find, Ron!

There was another treasure in the mail, as well.  All the way from London, England, it travelled.

Stage Door's "Collector's Series" edition of "Barbara Cook sings Songs of Perfect Propriety by Dorothy Parker".

Someone here mentioned this title a few weeks back.  Was it you, DR George "Doughty"?  If so, thanks for mentioning it here.  I would never have known about it otherwise.

It was me.  I'm glad I mentioned it.

Thanks for the comments on the JAY recordings, Elmore. I can say that the Kiss Me, Kate was well worth the $1 investment.

Listening to another dollar find, the last album John Raitt recorded. Not his best work, even when singing with Bonnie. His voice was much higher, more tenor than in earlier years. He sort of sounds like Charles Kimbrough in Company.

That's not the voice I want to hear singing "The Impossible Dream."

Desperately trying to stay awake.

Had a wonderful lunch - salad and fried chicken wings.

For dessert, I whipped up (for the second day in a row) a strawberry shortcake treat for the office staff.

One angel food cake (each day).
Slice in half.
Fresh strawberries (in juice formed by "sugaring") on top of bottom half
A nice layer of whipped cream.
The other half of the cake placed on top.
More strawberries and juice
More whipped cream.

Heaven!  (this works equally well with all kinds of fresh stuff, especially peaches).

I have also finished the monthly report I assemble every month before the first Friday of the month.

I took me half a day!  It has sometimes taken me three days (due to folks not finishing their updates).

Huzzah!

John G:  I'd give a pretty to experience a thunderstorm.

We just don't get them here in the Bay Area (at least, not as a rule).
