I'm taking today off from work. We're taking my aunt and uncle up to Seattle for the day. We're going to Pike Place Market and the Space Needle at the Seattle Center. We may go to the pier. I don't know where else we might go, but we'll be up there all day.

I should really be in bed, but I have Hanson upload fever. So, while I'm importing - one more CD to go - I've listened to Symphony No. 1 "Nordic" and am now into his masterpiece, Symphony No. 2 "Romantic." These are the Mercury Hanson Conducts Hanson CDs, and there are none finer. The sound is amazing and no one conducted Hanson better than Hanson even though some will tell you otherwise. However there are a few symphonies he didn't record for Mercury, so for those there are other choices, but the ones I have are Gerard Schwartz conducting - he really championed Hanson in the 80s and their quite nice - one wishes we had Hanson conducting, but these at least present the music simply and well if without Hanson's passion.

Now, for those who don't think they have a clew about Hanson, my guess is at least a few of you have heard a portion of the Romantic because Ridley Scott used it for the end titles of Alien, much to Jerry Goldsmith's chagrin. And then others of you will, if you have keen ears, realize that Mr. Stephen Spielberg most obviously temp-tracked the final ten or so minutes of ET with the final movement, and Mr. John Williams basically used that as his inspiration and guide. I once played it with the end of the film and it synchs up very well.

Another bad night of sleep: I keep getting charley horses and have to get up to massage my legs or stretch them. I was thinking that my legs were getting cold, but now I suspect it's a physical need for more potassium. We'll see.

One of my favorite Gershwin recordings is Hanson conducting with Eugene List at the piano: Concerto in F, Rhapsody in Blue, Cuban Overture. On MERCURY, of course. This recording entered my life at age ten, same year as Porgy and Bess.

We watched an interesting, albeit disturbing, movie last night; EYE IN THE SKY with Helen Mirren and, in his final film, Alan Rickman.

I'm up, I'm up, and there are no tree people here, and if they suddenly show up at nine rather than eight I shan't be happy as I could have used the extra hour of sleep and gotten seven rather than six hours.
