I'm home and have been for about an hour and a half.  When I first tried to sign onto my Wi-Fi, I would just get the message that my network is saved, but both my tablet and my phone wouldn't actually log on.  They would show a strong signal, though.  I would turn off the Wi-Fi and then turn it back on, and that usually helps, but it didn't for almost an hour...then I remembered that I could "power-cycle" (unplug from the power, then plug back in) my modem and that finally worked.  Now, I'm finally back on-line.

My sister, her boyfriend Larry and I took our uncle and aunt to Seattle for the day.  First, we went to Pike Place Market and walked around there for over an hour, then we all went on the Seattle Great Wheel.  It was pretty darned cool, and went VERY high!

After that, we walked around that area of Seattle (the pier and environs) for a little while before we headed up to the Seattle Center.  We stopped at a restaurant for a snack and rested for a while.  That wasted enough time that we could now get in line to go up the Space Needle (our tickets were for 5:30 pm).  We were up there for over an hour, just looking at the views of Seattle.  It's still pretty cool.

The last time we were in Seattle was with our visiting friends.  We saw his brother and the niece we just saw in Poulsbo.   A year after our trip to Seattle the brother, and father of the niece, passed away.

We were all pretty hungry by then, so we went to Cutters Crabhouse for dinner.  I had the Cutters Char-Grilled Cheeseburger.  Now, that was good!  Everyone enjoyed what they had.  We then headed home, chatted a bit with my mom (my uncle is her youngest brother, and my dad was asleep, so we didn't chat with him), then we said our good-byes.  They're leaving to go back to Germany in the morning.

But now, I still pretty full from dinner and need to go to sleep.

So good night, Jane and anyone who might be lurking.

Sad to hear about John McMartin.

A great character actor and always enjoyed his film and tv appearances.

This makes with his passing the last of "oldsters" of  Follies. We are still blessed to have some of the ghosts still with us

I slept quite well.  I think the potassium is kicking in and that made sleeping easier.

That was a lovely tribute to John McMartin, BK.  I never met him, but I do believe you are right that he and Charlotte were back together.  I'm very fond of her.

I once rode behind him on the 104 bus down Broadway - Charlotte lives around four blocks from me - and I didn't want to intrude on his thoughts.

I first heard off him with the Little Mary Sunshine cast recording, then Sweet Charity, then Follies.

When the Gay Men's Health Crisis did my reconstruction of Jubilee in 1998 at Carnegie Hall, John did one of the cameos, the drunk at the movie theatre fighting the Queen for a seat.  The director Herb Ross - one of the ugliest, most unpleasant men I've ever encountered - was so awful that I preferred to keep out of the way.  He really screwed that casting up. I'm not sorry he's dead.

In Herb Ross' defense, Barbara Cook speaks very kindly about him in her new bio. I still hate him.

DR JohnG, I have no idea why "Bushel and A Peck" was replaced by the second-rate "Pet Me, Poppa."  I had to transcribe that song from the film soundtrack for John Yap's complete recording of Guys & Dolls, and I never liked it or "Adelaide" very much. They also dropped one of the ballads for the new "A Woman In Love," which isn't too bad.

I never liked my work much for that recording; I didn't have any time to rethink or revise.  I had made my piano-cnductor scores, but I had no idea when the recording was occurring.  I was in DC working on something at the Library of Congress when John Yap called me wanting to know where the scores were.  I literally wrote two of them overnight to send them to London the next day, "Adelaide" and "A Woman in Love." When I got back to Manhattan, I sent him "Pet Me, Poppa" and "Travelin' Light." "Pet Me" is the only chart I'm happy wth.

This is another MIRANDA day, and my friend Eric Dietz is coming by after the Broadway softball league game to begin Season 2.  I'm thinking that I may run down to the Little Pie Co. and pick up a small peach pie for the visit.

When I saw the title of today's notes (without "John"), I immediately thought BK was writing about a certain sordid chapter in L.A./South Bay history.

The story I heard.....so it must be true....is that for some reason Samuel Goldwyn hated the song "Bushel & A Peck" - so a new song was written for the film.

I mostly remember John McMartin from Sweet Charity....and of course from the FOLLIES recording....

But he was also good in a few episodes of the old BEAUTY AND THE BEAST tv show, and I remember him will from a MARCUS WELBY MD episode....he played the father of David Cassidy, who was a young diabetic man who refused to take his insulin.....
