I saw my Thai Torturer today. I knew he'd talk about the election. He has some interesting insights. Don't know where they come from, but we chat as he digs his thumbs into my scar tissue. I swear I want to hit him at times. It does help me, but it's tough to go through.

Sorry to hear Jane's sad news.

I have some of my own. I had a call early this morning from a good friend. Her daughter is in intensive care and isn't expected to live. Anna's known this was coming for at least a year now. There's nothing more the doctors can do. Her daughter is in her forties. The cause? Drugs.

It's a regular size GE bottom-freezer model, replacing a counter-depth side-by-side one.  I wanted to change the configuration because, whether absolutely true or not, it makes more sense to me to keep the coldest air where it settles, and not have it fly out the door every time you open it.  Also, while the old GE Profile (counter depth) was nice looking with the cabinets, there ain't nothing wrong with a full depth model, especially when it's on the end like this.

I had a bottom freezer once and really liked it, for the same reason DR Ginny stated. I'd never seen one with  side-by-side doors above, though. Hope you're very happy with it.

They're very 'in' now, and they're called French Door models.  I never knew about them before starting to look around last week.

DR John G, you are very fortunate that your employer is so flexible with leave. After my mother died I needed to return to California to help my dad take care of all sorts of things. I asked for an unpaid leave. I was told no, that they didn't want to do the paperwork! They advised me to quit, then let them know when I was ready to return. My immediate boss told me to look for a job with a better company. Those were my feelings, too.

It was a real surprise how many co-workers approached me at work before my departure to say how much they admired what I was doing. What?! It had never occurred to me to do otherwise.

Glad to hear your dental visit was relatively smooth, DR Chas.

I have another one coming up next week and will be glad to have it behind me.

Did you know that the average dentist makes more money than most doctors?

Back from a two-and-a-half mile jog.  Before the second rehearsal I ate two of my low-cal hot dogs on the low-cal buns - the two together nets 330 calories (I know, amazing, right) and then I just jogged off about 250 calories, so I'm down to 80 - instead of doing what I was thinking about, I'm making a very small portion of Wacky Noodles - 400 calories of pasta exactly, and with the other stuff that goes in I should net out right at 1000 calories for the day.

I can't begin to tell you, Jeanne, of how blessed I feel because my employer talks about putting family first. And they mean it. I've seen co-workers on all levels leave, even with projects hanging in the balance, because of a lockdown at one of their children's schools or because of some other family-related emergency.

With desk space at a premium now, it will be good to have me working from home, even if that home is in Louisville. One of my co-workers lives in Colorado Springs and does everything from her home. Another co-worker here in San Antonio decided he didn't want to brave the traffic anymore, so he works from home. Both are on my immediate team. Another co-worker decided she wanted to work at our downtown office, and everyone was fine with that. None of this interferes with our getting the job done.

Starting to watch Wim Wenders' Alice in the Cities, about a German journalist in America who becomes more interested in photography than in writing. Interesting German indy that I somehow missed. It's the first of that recently released Criterion trilogy. The black and white photography, recently restored, is gorgeous.

TOD:

I love Kerry's list, especially You'll Never Get Rich, which isn't a great movie, but all five Cole Porter songs are overlooked gems. You Were Never Lovelier has a great Mercer-Kern score, including I'm Old Fashioned and Dearly Beloved as well as the Shorty George.

Cover Girl, Lady from Shanghai, Down to Earth, Gilda and Only Angels Have Wings are other faves.

Why, when it was 102 outside, did I get a hot cup of decaf from McDonald's? And why, despite the heat, did I enjoy it so much?

That was rather crummy of them, sorry.  I hope something good came out of it.
