The only time I have seen Merrily was a production Ann Morrison directed using the original script. I still think this is the best version of the score and truly one of the greatest overtures of all time.

Sure, the book is always going to be problematic. Who cares about starting a show with three consecutive nervous breakdowns from people we don't know, much less care about? But I also think Sondheim is to blame for making Franklin even less dimensional than Furth's book. This guy, according to his score, is a one-note Franklin who writes the same damn song over and over and over again. If he's so brilliant, as we keep getting told, why can't he do anything but write that one song? Maybe that's why he wants to become a producer. He knows he doesn't have but one national treasure in him.

I helped my instructor Joy teach her first group class tonight. It was in Cumbia, which doesn't have a lot of rules, is relaxed and not too hard to pick up. Still, I didn't know a step of it until an hour before the class. That sort of freaked me out, but things went well and one couple really got into it. The other is taking a little more time.

This is just a three-time deal. Tomorrow they learn bachata and on Thursday or Friday they'll do salsa.

Been listening to the Villa-Lobos symphonies again - marvelous.  And I kind of enjoy not listening in order.  When these discs came out, the pairings were interesting - symphony one with symphony eleven - that kind of thing.  So, I'm just going in disc order now rather than symphony order.
