Watched La La Land. There's one of these every single year - Whiplash, this guy's previous film, was one when that came out - the film that critics and Hollywood types just decide is the "it" film and there's no stopping it. Basically, it's very nice to look at, thankfully there's no dopey quick cutting in the numbers, and it has a certain amount of fun to it. But the story isn't much and goes on for too long, it's not "really" a musical in the classic sense - it plays at it, yes, but the final third of the film has no numbers to speak of until the final ten minutes or so. And while Mr. Gosling is game, c'mon - there are wonderful actors who can actually sing and dance - he gets by in the way Steve Martin got by in Pennies from Heaven. Emma Stone is a good actor and I enjoyed their performances, certainly.
