Does anyone have the Hiya app on their iPhone?  Keith has it on his Samsung and it seems to work well.  I have begun receiving spam calls and am thinking of installing the app.

I posted my last question and then checked on what is happening at FB.  Interesting timing after asking here about an app....my Canadian friend said
"Oh my gosh, CBC Marketplace has a segment right now on "What you need to know about your Smart Phone" ... holy smokes it is ALARMING what you give up when you say yes to aps. Where they heck is my "Razor" phone ... I'm going back to "pre-smart phone" times. And there is a hacker convention in Las Vegas!! Who knew. And it's massive. It's a freaking convention for hackers!! A convention!! WOW .... mind blown"

I have no interest in having a smart phone. "They" get too much personal info that way. Plus, if you lose it, someone can access ALL your information that you have on it, like banking info, medical info, etc. My flip phone is fine.

After reading the article, apparently the US has stricter regulations than Canada does.

I went kicking and screaming into the smartphone age.  Since I don't hear well enough to carry on a proper conversation using my phone having a smart phone for better texting and email truly helps.  Then not knowing my way around the new town having a phone that can give me directions really helps.

Basically the apps I use are for the library, and I really don't believe they are going to scam me, facebook, google music, pandora, fitbit, and messenger.  I was forced into messenger which is really just my messages from facebook.

I could easily just live with just the music on my phone.

If anyone carved a tunnel through a tree today I would be mortified.  As a child it was fascinating.  This weekend the tree did not survive, possibly, the biggest storm to hit the region in more than a decade :(

I could be wrong about this, but I don't see that it's easier to hack a smartphone than any other device. Your computer, your tablet, your smartphone can all be hacked. However, it's easier for someone to access--as in steal or make unauthorized use of--a phone. I don't mean to minimize the risks of being hacked and dumb phones are still available. I used one for a long time.

Jane, I can understand your use of a smartphone. I use very few apps, but they can certainly be helpful.
As for the library, no, I don't think they would scam you. The greater risk is someone racking into the library's records.

Since Bruce's crickets respond to his shouting I wonder if they'd respond to certain kinds of music. Maybe they'd leave. Or maybe they'd gather round.  ;)

I believe some hackers hack just for the fun of it. I used to work with a guy, a very good programmer with a playful personality, who hacked the corporate records. One day he told me our section manager's salary and how much of a raise she'd gotten. He wasn't malicious--just curious and playful. I've often wondered what happened to him. (Cannot recall his last name.) He'd be a very good director of security. Or a hacker.

Ron, I'm sorry you're still sick. I hope you're feeling better very soon. I only had a mild case of this Thing, but it proved to be very persistent. Do take care.

Managed to get to Marge's and back without killing myself or anyone else.  Richard and I are both going to tonight's AAUW meeting, so I'm going to rest my eyes for a while.

Congrats to DR Ginny on driving with her new eyes.

Not if the person is checking out "The Anarchist's Cookbook" and other similar topics. ::)

Most libraries are very big on intellectual freedom and protecting patrons' privacy and rights.  A court order is needed for any Timberland employee to divulge any information about any patron to any officer...as well it should be.
