I agree with all the torch selections so far. I'll add "But Not for Me"...
I'm giving up on the Sellers film. G'night.

I like "Blues in the Night" quite a bit, too.  My favorite rendition is the one by Miss Dinah Shore.

Miss Eileen Farrell, believe it or not, also did a killer rendition of "Blues in the Night."

Before I forget (again), I want to thank my two cyber children, Ann and Jed, for their kind and extremely biased comments about my performance in SCROOGE.

Well, I couldn't very well risk another bitchslapping, now could I?  (And if we were really trying to give false praise, we would have commended the rest of the production as much as we did your fine performance!)

Seriously:  The entire Carly Simon album "Torch".
Ditto!  (One of the discs der B and I played on our eastward trek last year, and every song a gem.)

Der B and I just got back from the York of New, safe and sound.  The dogs are all fine, none the worse for our having been gone all day.  And anything more will have to wait until later, because I'm going to bitchslap my pillow!  (We did get some pics, which I hope der B will post after we reawaken.)

The TOD:

The Man That Got Away:  did anyone else sing it besides Miss Garland?
Losing My Mind:  Dorothy Collins
Moanin' Low:  Libby Holman, who's recordings from the 30s run the gamut from excellent to did-she-just-crawl-out-of-bed-and-how-stoned-was-she?
Love Me or Leave Me:  Ruth Etting
He Was Too Good to Me:  Barbara Cook
I Get a Kick Out of You: Eileen Rogers
Little Girl Blue:  Doris Day

DRJay, I agree with you about Eileen Farrell; "I Got A Right To Sing The Blues" is one great album!

DR Elmoore:

Yes I know that Marshall Baer has past. I believe it was around the time of the Broadway revival of Once Upon a Matress. From what I read he was a very particular kind of man. And didn't like his songs recorded. He held up the release of the Mad Show for a long time and I am sure that they are only releasing it now because the rights are now available. I am not sure of the reason behind him pulling the release of Ben Bagley's tribute album.

Another favorite torch song

My Man as sung by La Streisand

I agree with Elmoore's first two choices too.

DRMichaelShayne, on the last HELLO, DOLLY! revival, I heard that whenever Miss Channing wanted to rethink things and Mr Champion's name was evoked, her comment was:  But Gower'sh dead!  I was just channeling Carol last night.

I don't believe that Marshall Baer could have had that much control over a Columbia-Sony album; I'll ask some friends who knew Marshall.  From all accounts of his behavior on the revival of "Once Upon A Mattress," the revival proved he was right and the director wrong.  And now the director's dead!

DRSDerBrucer and SWW, I'm happy to see you're home safely.  How was your trek to the Virgin Megastore?

I had meant to add a torch song I didn't know until I scored it for Debbie Gravitte:  "The Things I Want" by Messrs Kern and Hammerstein.  It's almost a throwaway number for Dorothy Lamour in HIGH WIDE AND HANDSOME, but it's a great torch song and Miss Debbie sang the hell out of it.

Happiest of birthdays, DR Jane.

Re: "Blues in the Night" Dinah Shminah.  Eileen Shmileen.  The killer version of this song is done by none other than Miss Lainie Kazan.  Shall I bring my LP with me to prove it, DB Jay?  ;)

"My Man," "Man That Got Away," and "Losing My Mind" are all wonderful choices (as is the Carly Simon "Torch" album).  My votes would also go to "As Long as He Needs Me" and "The Man I Love."  And in a rare entry that was originally sung by a male, "Sometimes a Day Goes By."  That would still count, no?

Confidential to DR DiT:  I know we add days to Jewish holidays here in America, but is Chanukah NINE days in Canada??  ;)

Oh, whatta night! We had fun fun fun, and BK read the heck outa the first chapter. Can't wait to hear the CD! The prize of the night, of course, to Der Brucer and Woods - who made the fifteen hour roundtrip to fest with the rest. Yowza - now that's love!

Bruceie m'dear, thanks again for such a lovely evening. I'll read the book on my interminable flights tomorrow. Oh - Please remember to call Adrian B-B on my B-half, okay? Sheesh - I'm still short one press rep. That's what i get for bein' away all those years...

Onward. Lots to do today to get ready for bein' away a month. Laters, kidz.
