My main trouble with torch songs is that, often, the character is pitying herself, leaving me nothing to do.  I can't pity someone who's already doing the pitying for me.  But if the character's not pitying herself, than I'm bawling.  Does that make any sense?

Tried to think if I ever wrote any, and came up with this, from On the Brink:

I FUNCTIONED WELL BEFORE I MET YOU
AND I CAN FUNCTION WELL TODAY
DURING THE DAY
WHEN WORK IS THROUGH
THOUGHTS OF YOU HAUNT ME
I NEVER SHOULD HAVE LET YOU GET AWAY

THROUGH THE DAY I THRIVE ON DOING BUSINESS
THEN I HAVE NO TROUBLE GETTING THROUGH
HUNDREDS OF DISTRACTIONS TAKE MY MIND AWAY FROM YOU
AND I'M ALL RIGHT
GETTING THROUGH THE NIGHT'S A DIFFERENT STORY
OFTEN I AWAKE AT THREE OR FOUR
NO MATTER HOW I TRY I CAN'T RESTRAIN
MY FOOLISH BRAIN
FROM THINKING:
OF HOW YOU'D PLANT SWEET KISSES ON MY FACE
OF WHISPERED WORDS THAT SET OUR PULSES RACING LIKE "I LOVE YOU"
YOU LOVE ME
WHERE ARE YOU TONIGHT MY DARLING?
THERE'S NO WAY TO FORGET YOU
THERE'S NO GETTING THROUGH THE NIGHT
BUT I'LL BE ALL RIGHT
SOON AS THE NIGHT IS THROUGH

Kind of funny sort-of torch song story:  There was a lounge pianist here in Portland for ages named Jeannie Hoffman (she released a few albums in the 60s, some of you may have heard her) who had a penchant for a little drinky-winky before playing (OK, maybe several drinky-winkies).  I went to see her one night when she was in her cups and asked her if she would do "You Go To My Head."  The wheels slowly cogitated in her brain (you could literally see her trying to go through "memory files"), until she finally slurred, "I don't know that one, but I can do 'Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.'"  There's logic in there somewhere, I'm sure of it.

Happy Birthday, DR Jane!

As per my promise to Der Brucer, Elmore and others, I hereby apologize for my errant and truant ways, and do solemly declare my intent to post regularly and frequently, so as to return to the good graces of this here board.

A lovely time was indeed had by the missus and myself at the reading, despite the miserable, hideous, and just-plain-yech weather outside the bookstore, and it was wonderful to acquaint/re-acquaint ourselves with some long-time online friends. I must still register my disappointment at the lack of ham chunks and pointy hats at the reading however. Cheese slices and diet coke sans pointy hats might make for a nice party for others, but Hainsies/Kimlets deserve better (thus speaketh the Orthodox Jew who has never eaten a ham chunk, with or without cheese, in his life).

Finished Writer's Block this morning, and enjoyed much of it greatly. A few nit-picks, though: (I don't believe that I'm spoiling anything here, but proceed at your caution): I would have liked an earlier introduction of the naarative device used, rather than having it come up when it did. Physically, the book is a handsome specimen, but there are several poorly-set words, where the leading is much too tight (letters of a word jam into each other). Oh, and in Scrabble, "Equinox" would score more than 147 points if placed the way you describe (unless the "q" was a blank, in which case, nevermind :)).

That's all for now...it's good to be back!

Oh, and I'm not sure if it quite qualifies as a "torch song," but the biggest gut-wrencher of a number that I can think of is "Who Gave You Permission?" (cut from Ballroom) on Lost in Boston IV

Some wonderful torch song choices, including several that I would have made including Garland's "The Man That Got Away" (I think the greatest ever) and Dorothy Collins' "Losing My Mind."

Let me add "Bill." I think Lena Horne's rendition on the TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY soundtrack album is my favorite.

I'm finally up - had a nice long sleep and will get out of here to go walking shortly.

Elan: Actually equinox scores exactly that because I laid it out on the scrabble board and added the points (unless I added wrong, which is, of course, a possibility).  As to the leading, I'm sure you're right.  Whenever we were fixing hyphens at ends of lines for bad breaks this sometimes happened, and I just didn't catch them all - at that point I should have had someone else go through the book rather than me because my eye wasn't sharp enough.

JRand your cousin Lana was very cute.  Thank you for posting her photo and sharing her story with us.

JMK at least you didn’t eat an entire meal of bacon bits. LOL  We were also scared of getting sick but fortunately that didn’t happen.

Tomovoz summer sounds very good today.

MBarnum-LOL, this Jewish gal grew up celebrating Christmas.  Before we were married I was on the phone with Keith’s mother, not thinking about what I was saying to her, excited I had just gotten my tree.  She was obviously shocked I had a tree.  In my youthful wisdom I said “it’s okay the menorah is sitting next to it”, at which point all I heard was dead silence.  ;D Even worse I didn’t really have the menorah yet and made Keith take me immediately to get one.  We found a beautiful antique one we couldn’t afford but couldn’t resist, which is now sitting on the counter next to me.

Oh wow, I just noticed there is snow on the mountains. :D

Now to read today’s notes and about yesterday’s fun in NY.

Fun newstory of the day:

Company lets U.S. travelers 'Go Canadian'

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (AP) -- An American T-shirt company has a solution for their fellow citizens who want to vacation in Europe without having to answer questions about U.S. politics -- pose as Canadians.

Torch songs. I agree with so many of the choices. I think Jerry Herman gave us two of the best - "Time Heals Everything," as Ginny mentioned. And "If He Walked Into My Life" (Eydie Gorme) - that is, before Dan (the Man) gave us his version.

Jennifer Holliday:  "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going!"

Lorraine Ellison:  "Stay With Me"

(Two of the finest examples of tortured, masochistic torch songs ever written or performed!)

I watched the "Nanny" reunion last night (YES, I'm a "Nanny" junkie), and you coulda knocked me over with a glance:

I never knew until then that Ann Guilbert, who portrayed "Fran's" nana "Yetta" was the same Ann Guilbert who played "Laura's" best friend/neighbor "Millie" on "The Dick Van Dyke Show."

Bruce thank you for the BIG birthday cheer and more thanks to Jay, Jose, and Tomovoz,

Jose safe travels on my special day.  I’m staying home and beginning my morning with HHW, well almost.  While I was still in bed Echo gave me a darling birthday card.  It has cute little teeth marks.  Bogie isn’t as talented so I had to find his as I worked my way into the bathroom.  It was a card with a beautiful drawing of a cat that looks a bit like him.  Keith’s loving card was sitting on the sink waiting for me.

Sandra, stay healthy and enjoy your cherry coke as long as I don’t have to have any.

JRand you are so clever, thank you.  I love hearts-really.

TCB that is great.  It took me awhile to focus on all that activity. :D

Noel, your words just made my day.

Panni so many happy faces to make me smile today-thank you.

just to be pedantic, Bruce (and what's the point of nit-picking if you're not going to get pedantic, I ask you?): "equinox" scores 155 as you've described it (10 for the q, 20 for the x, 1 each for the other five letters gives 35; times three=105, plus 50 gives 155, not including points gained from whatever "hook" was played)...

sorry... I've been playing Scrabble competitively for a few months now (not only is she lovely and talented, but the wife has the patience of a saint to deal with her husband's poring over word lists and dancing over playing "agueweed" against a stronger opponent), so I tend to over-analyze the game.

Oh, and (potential spoiler ahead) I figured out the main plot twist, as I remember you using a similar device back in your "real A" days, and was looking for it from the get-go... still quite a fun read, though!

(thus speaketh the Orthodox Jew who has never eaten a ham chunk, with or without cheese, in his life).

Elan and a Catholic Seminaruian friend were tauting each other about their religious practices:

Seminarian: Have you never tried Ham?
Elan: No, have you ever tried sex with a women?
Seminarian: No.
Elan: I suspect it's better than ham.

I must quickly cleanse myself, then hurry off to the DMV to get my new address docs. Dropped Abie off for dogie daycare today. Figured he needed some playtime with other mutts instead of lying around the house watching me sit in front of the computer. The staff greeted him like a long lost friend. "Abie! He's back! Thank you for bringing him!"  I felt like the proud mother of the most popular kid in school.
