Well, you won't believe it, but here I am at the airport in some kind of wireless zone, and the dern thing works!  Thanks for the wishes!

I can't believe it - I'm posting from an airport.  These new-fangled wireless things are amazingly amazing.  Not many people here.  I finally got to bed at one-thirty and got up at four.  Left the hotel at four-fifteen, got to the airport twenty-five minutes later.  Got my aisle bulkhead seat after they saw I was not going to take no for an answer.  So, at least I won't have anyone sitting in front of me and putting their seat in my lap.

Dark chocolate and rum are the predominant flavors in this dense and decadent cake. Because the flavors are so intense, you need only a thin slice to be perfectly satisfied. The cake slices well after chilling 1 hour, but plan to refrigerate it overnight before serving to allow the flavors to mellow.

 
1 cup butter, softened
2 cups sugar
4 large eggs
1/2 cup dark rum
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 cup hot water
1 teaspoon almond extract
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Mousse Frosting
Garnish: chocolate shavings

Beat butter at medium speed with an electric mixer until fluffy; gradually add sugar, beating well. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating until blended after each addition. Add rum; beat until blended.

Combine flour and next 5 ingredients; add to sugar mixture alternately with hot water, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Beat at low speed until blended after each addition; stir in flavorings.

Pour batter into 2 greased and floured 9-inch round cakepans.

Bake at 350° for 27 minutes (cake will not test quite done). Cool in pans on a wire rack 10 minutes; remove from pans, and cool completely on wire racks.

Spread 1 cup Mousse Frosting between layers. Frost top and sides of cake with remaining frosting. Garnish, if desired. Cover and chill 8 hours. Store in refrigerator.

Yield: 12 to 15 servings (Or 2-3 if Jose or Panni are present)

There's a quote I need to get right.
It goes something like this: It was said of Richard Rodgers that he pissed melody.

What's the actual quote and who said it?  I have a feeling it might have been Noel Coward, but it doesn't sound like a very Cowardian thing to say.

Which reminds me, one of the Generation F'd cast members introduced me to his father as Noel Coward.  Nobody bat an eye.

Who do I have to blank to wish Bruce a good blank?

Tonight at 8:30, a mad experiment will take place for the first (and perhaps the last) time.  An audience will take seats (free, ticketless, reservationless) at the 78th St. Theatre Lab (above Stand Up New York, just east of Broadway) and a cast of eight will sing some of the songs by that great American songwriter, Irving "Squeaky" Klein.  There will be jazz.  There will be protest songs.  There will be ballet.  There will be a cheesy 80's pop duet.  There will be a drinking song.  There will be performance art.  There will be bossa nova.  There will be a cantata.  All of it improvised before your very eyes.

I think that, in honor of our esteemed BK's birthday, we should get our very own Guy Haines to sing a program of songs!

So let's get a list made, kids, of songs we would like to ask our very own Guy Haines to sing.

I, for one, would like to hear him sing "Is It a Crime?" from Bells Are Ringing.  Transposed down to a more comfortable key, of course!
