You are correct, sir.  And she only did a smattering of live t.v., which is why these have been my elusive holy grail for so long.

Lovely CABARET story DRGINNY.  Okay....so now we just have to decide if we want the Saturday matinee or the Sunday matinee for MAMMA MIA! but plenty of time to decide.  The show is not until April!

In general, Sundays work better for me, because I work every other Saturday.

Well, I gave two hours of my life away tonight to DE-LOVELY. I absolutely loathed the framing device. Just too twee for words and a downright annoying way to work in some songs.

I found most of the musical moments pretty painful. Kevin Kline scaling back his own singing was bad enough since he sings SO much in the movie, but if he was going to immulate Cole Porter vocally, why not go all the way - Cole was left handed, and Kline is right handed, making no attempt to do otherwise. A small but telling detail. I think this movie was made by people who weren't interested in the details.

Wasn't that the most dreadful Ethel Merman imitation ever on "Anything Goes"? And all of the pop stars who graced stages to give their (inappropriate) renditions of Porter tunes - just forgettable, non-period renditions. An Alfred Drake imitator who was a tenor and not a bass-baritone. A Patricia Morison imitator who belted "So in Love" from her chest. Oh, poor Cole must have been rolling over in his grave.

I was SHOCKED at how mediocre John Barrowman's "Night and Day" was. I was certain he'd nail it, and he just didn't come close.

Did I like anything? The steady streams of handsome men were appealing to look at, but who were all these guys? Did Cole ever have a long-time love affair with a man, or were they all just playthings? The movie hinted that his male companion at the end was deeply in love with him but was banished from Cole's court near the end. With so much else wrong in the movie, was this true or another fictional motif in the film?

See what I mean? When they get so many things wrong with songs out of their place in time and people not being close to their real-life counterparts, it's hard to buy ANYTHING the film put forth. Or at least it made me wonder what was true to life and what wasn't. I'm going to have to drag down one of my Cole biographies and get the real story.

Well I must soon depart to play the midnight (not quite) mass at the church, and by the time I return, I fear I will be too blitzed (or blitzened, as the case may be) to log on again, so let me take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a

Merry Christmas Eve to all!

I have been keeping up with the posts all day, and now I finally get around to posting myself.  I have had a lovely christmast eve-day here in ellensburg with my dear folks.  My sister was unable to get time off work, so it's just the three of us this year.  Feels a little strange.  Gone are the festivities of years past...just a nice quiet dinner of leftover homemade chicken soup after a day of helping my mother clean out the back storage room.  That, she said, was all the Christmas present she wanted...help sortiing through old books and stuff and getting it cleaned out.  So my father and I spent the afternoon doing that.  Before that I spent a lovely midday with three old friends of mine from high school.  Of us four girls, two are now married and have children, so my single friend and I got to have lots of baby-holding time.  My friend Evie has two sons, a 3 year old and a 7month old, and Amber brought her 6 month old daughter...all adorable children.
I just woke up from a rather long post-dinner nap.  At 10 we will go to Christmas services at our church.

Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth
The peace that was meant to be.
With God as our father
Brothers all are we.
Let me walk with my brother
In perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me
Let this be the moment now.
With every step i take
Let this be my solemn vow.
To take each moment
And live each moment
With peace eternally.
Let ther be peace on earth,
And let it begin with me.

(child)
Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth
The peace that was meant to be.
With god as our father
Brothers all are we.
Let me walk with my brother
In perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me

DRFrancois, I don't believe it's mine.  A few years ago I did a huge Christmas medley for a British conductor, Martin Yates, and the truth is that I have no memory beyond John Williams' "Merry Christmas" from HOME ALONE and "White Christmas" of what's in it.  It's possible that "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" was in it, and this is my arrangement, but I realy don't know!

We are having a lovely evening with Craig and trying to stay awake.  Bryan's flight was canceled just before take off due to the fog at our airport.  He is on route by car.

Penny O called on my cell while we were out to dinner, fortunately Keith had Bruce’s address on his palm pilot.

Re:  The Christmas Song.  There is a fairly rare version by Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 that was only released on a holiday BF Goodrich special LP (yes, there were such things in "the olden days," as my kids call anything before yesterday).  It has a quite stunning Richard Hazard orchestration and Lani and Karen sound quite fetching on it.
I remember very well the LPs, don't remember SM&B appearing on them.

Good Evening!

Merry Christmas!!!

Whew!  After cutting my hair(!), I got all my gift shopping done on my way to Steve's...  I would have gotten it done a few minutes earlier, but NPR was playing a "story" that had me sitting in my car until it ended.  -And crying.  A beautiful story about the kindness of strangers.  I need to look up the information on the site later on.  In any case...

Dinner at Steve's was fun.  We were joined by his apartment mate, Rob, and another friend, Tim.  We listened to music.  We ate a lot of food.  And then we ate some more food.  Pork tenderloin, boiled new potatoes, sweet potato casserole, green beans, various breads... and lots of snacks before, during and after the meal.

After dinner, we popped in the DVD of What If?  -WOW!  What a different show it is from out front!?!?! ;)  I didn't "get" the CD until I arrived back in Richmond last night - it was waiting in my pile of mail.  I almost watched it last night, but I decided to go ahead and watch it anew with everyone else tonight.  Everyone enjoyed it...  And Bob was particularly taken with Paul Haber - Note to DR MBarnum: You now have competition!

:D

After the show, we exchanged presents, and listened to more of the weird selection of Christmas music that was playing on the Cable TV "radio".   ::)  I was getting a bit tired, and the Bob's two cats were starting to get to me too - I have a slight allergy to cats - so after some very nice hugs, I headed home.

On the way back from Steve's, I decided to drive to downtown to see the big display of lights at the James Center - I missed them last year.  I got there right at midnight.  There's a mini-carillon there that chimes on the hour.  Well, after the midnight chimes, it started playing the Star Spangled Banner.  ???  -But it brought a smile to my face.
