The therapist did her best/worst on my leg today and the pain was a lot less than it has been. She hoisted that haunch off the table and pressed that foot into my back side. The first time I didn't even grab the table.

I hope it gets easier with every visit.

We have "single stream" (I think it's called?) recycling, in which all paper, plastic, and metal items go into one huge bin.  You're supposed to have rinsed the bottles, etc., before throwing them in there, which we do.  And even though I know we're not perfect at that, there's never been an odor.  But any kind of actual food container that "could" be recycled but would be ridiculous to clean up, forget it, out it goes with the trash.  I am not a complete saint, after all.  :)

I am tired of cleaning peanut butter jars and don't always do so.

DR Jeanne, my mind is blown at the outrageous attitudes of your landlord or management company.  One hardly knows where to begin.  Their "management style" is disheartening and infuriating.  And this all came about because of the 32-years-in-residence tenants and two stove burners?  Is this for real?  Do these people live in the same universe as the rest of us?  How is it possible to hold one's good tenants in such contempt?

Do they own/manage a lot of other properties in town?  How extensive is their empire?

One friend of mine has lived in the same rent stabilized apartment in Greenwich Village for many years, and her landlord is just awful toward her and the few other remaining "stabies" in the building.

I'm sure all leases these days give them a right of entry under certain circumstances, and in fact they probably have for years.  I think I had them in my leases, but they were never EVER abused, and I never had landlords who were so blatantly antagonistic.  Please do consult with a good tenant's attorney as to this particular situation.

The Mother owns the building. Her father built it, so there's a sense of family pride, which is a good thing. Many of the people working at management companies could care less.

The Daughter lives on-site and manages things. There aren't many on-site managers around these days and I think that's a shame. I think it helps to keep things under control.

As far as I know, Mom owns no other rentals, but the daughter's Uncle owns several and he has frequent (monthly?) inspections. I think that's where the idea came from.

Until now Mom and Daughter just waited until someone complained, then did the repair. I've told Daughter several times that some people are reluctant to say anything, that it sounds like complaining and they may be afraid their rent will be raised. Also, it's unrealistic to expect tenants, most of whom have never been homeowners (at least in this building) to know much about maintenance. I think it finally dawned on them that their lackadaisical approach was not a good one and they've now gone to the other extreme and are following Uncle's example.

They are not nasty people, but lack education and business sense.

The pasta sauce is in the freezer, and tomorrow I will make a vat of chili.  Tpmprrw afternoon, Joshie and Rob Berman are seeing Backbeard, and then Rob is taking us to dinner.

I don't think it occurs to them how this comes across to the tenants. If I'd known at the start that they were going to do this, I would not have rented here. they really do act as if we have all the time in the world to wait for contractors to arrive and so on. I've had to say, "I have a really full week this week." When I say that they understand, but apparently they don't think of it on their own.

I need to find the score I am editing next, the fourth Moross Ballet Ballad titled "Red Riding Hood Revisited."  I think I know where it is.  then I need to assemble my meds for the next week.  After that it's the PBS Downton Abbey Marathon, which is linked to some of the tackiest gifts for handing the station a "donation."

When we moved here I asked if we needed to rinse the recycling, as in California where they don't to save water.  I got some strange looks over that one.  I realized later I should have let them know I was rinsing until told otherwise.

My question for ASK BK DAY:

If there is one piece of furniture from your past that you could have back in pristine condition - what would it be?

This morning I tried to call two LA housing agencies, but couldn't get through to either one. Par for the course. They wouldn't be bureaucracies otherwise. I found a useful website, though, on California rental law. It does state that tenants are expected to keep the premises as clean and sanitary as possible. (That doesn't include clutter, right?) But that's a very gray area. I was chatting with a friend who has had many rentals. He said, "If they open your refrigerator, tell them, 'You're my landlord, not my mother!'"

Yes, I don't want an ugly confrontation. I think the best course is negotiation. But I won't hesitate to use a guilt trip or two, if needed. After all, it is NOT my responsibility to check the roof.

I used to assume that progress with health issues was linear--a little at a time, but a gradual progression. I've learned that isn't always the case. Sometimes we need to do a lot of work to see ANY progress. It doesn't mean we're not making progress, but it may take a while to see it. It sounds like you are making progress, though. A session without noticeable progress isn't necessarily backsliding, either.

Rehearsal in twenty minutes, then a jog.  We should be done by five-thirty, and it should be a bit cooler then.

Funny, but if they own the frig and it is full of mold, which I am sure is not in your refrigerator, that would be a concern.

I just cleaned a plate of tacos as if I hadn't eaten in weeks. The corn tortillas were topped with beans, carnitas, cabbage-lime slaw, queso fresco and avocado. A cucumber-jalapeño margarita on the side. Very happy.

The Washington Post reviewed McDonald's new sriracha and kale burger, which, I am sure, BK is aching to try:

It’s the fast-food equivalent of watching your father sport rompers and pledge his undying love for Drake. But the quarter-pounder jacked up on Sriracha Mac sauce doesn’t taste bad.
