JB feels at home. And I'm glad to be here.

Are you having any hurricane/storm backlash?

Winds, some rain. It just seems stuck in that mode.

I've heard from Houston friends and Austin friends that they're okay.

I have not seen any photos from Port Arkansas, which I feel was destroyed. A shame. I used to love to visit there. They had better restaurants per capita than any other place in the state.

Also, Rockport has been slammed. It's where I went to see whopping cranes and other rare storks and birds that live by the water. Maybe they haven't migrated yet.

Back from a run-through of the little cabaret-ish benefit program that happens this afternoon.

The event is in this old former bank building, which is magnificent, but you couldn't have picked a worse place acoustically, what with the huge open rooms and high ceilings.  Some of what comes out of the various singers'/actors' pie holes is echoed all over the damned place.

However, the attendees should be sufficiently plied with adult beverages for it not to matter much.

LOVE the Saturday Review notes.

I have a couple of 1950s or 1960s issues somewhere around here, and have fond memories of it being a regular thing.  I remember reading it occasionally during the late 1960s, and I subscribed for a while during the 1970s.  BK's general description is perfect.

I binged on the orchestral music of Richard Strauss at one point in the mid-1980s and again in the early 1990s, and finally had to walk away from it for a while.  What got me going on it then were the two Reiner recordings of Also Sprach Zarathustra.  I was blown away by it, and must have acquired every so-called audiophile original and reissue there was back then.

I'd come to him earlier from the operatic angle.  We studied Ariadne auf Naxos in school, and to this day, the RCA Rysanek/Peters/Peerce recording with Leinsdorf is magic for me.  I spent some time with Der Rosenkavalier and finally came to love it, but it seemed so massive that it took me a while.  Later on, my deeper attraction to Elektra and Salome kind of took over.  I never got to know any of the others.

I think DR Elmore has said these pieces are too long and overstuffed for his taste, and I totally understand that.  Even in those last two "shorter" operas which I find electrifying, there are stretches that seem like there's no end in sight.  I think the man has to have written more notes than anybody.

At the benefit for the theater this afternoon, there'll be a signed poster donated for a raffle by BK's close personal friend Stephen Sondheim.  (I think it's a LuPone Sweeney Todd.)

Got to go!  I've got the article on DR Elmore's librarian friend opened up to read later.

Sunday afternoon greetings!  Fr. Richard conducted the service at Christ The King in Dayton today, so, of course, I went with him.  Now we're both ready for naps...

DR Elmore, great to read about Bob!  As a reference librarian, I often used Wikipedia as a place to start, but never as a research stopping point.  Always used it to help me get to more authoritative sources...

I discovered SATURDAY REVIEW in high school, probably doing Reader's Guide research for some term paper, and read it faithfully until its demise.

The bird got me up in time for church.

I came to see how you and JB were doing.  I'm glad all is well.

The drive back was not unpleasant until I got north of Waco. There had been an accident in Tennessee that caused a backup and it was rather brutal as it involved a trailer with a manufactured home on it. The home was destroyed and all over the interstate.

Oh my, what a mess.

Waco was at a standstill, so, thanks to directions from my Waze app, I left I-35, drove through the city and eventually bypassed the whole mess, whatever it was.

Great.  I just learned something.  I thought it was Wayze.  I should try it and compare it to Keith's Google which is better than my iPhone.
