Started watching Fences. I don't think August Wilson is quite right for the big screen. As much as I love his writing, it all sounds like a play, too heavy and too nonstop. The best moments are when the talking stops and you see Viola Davis wondering how to cary on.
In a way, it's like Sondheim or Porter on the screen. You don't need the third verse or the encore, as much as you love the lyrics.
A few years ago, they (I don't remember who "they" are...I have the site bookmarked on my old computer) made audio recordings of all 10 of August Wilsons plays. I downloaded the whole series, which is no longer available to download. I haven't listened to all of them yet, but what I have heard is pretty darned wonderful. If anyone wants the MP3 files (there's one whole file for each play), when I get home, I can send you a link to download them.
