Isn't there also a Halloween ballet in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn?

And of course Halloween in Applause.

DR Elmore, I am amazed that you have come around so strongly in wanting a kitten.  Or maybe it's not as sudden as it seems.  I can tell you, though, your day to day life will change quite a bit!   :)

A couple of very heavy Kurzweils and a heavy amp are in the car, to be loaded into the theater later today.  The hard part at that end is getting this stuff up a narrow spiral staircase.  (Don't ask.)

Indeed.  And it looks like he (is he a he?) could grow up looking like our own Mikey ... who we didn't name, this one was a rescue from somewhere closer to vixmom's neck of the woods.

Friday morning greetings!  Richard and I are going to a noon book discussion at Miami University's Hamilton Campus.  The topic is Hillbilly Elegy, which I have discussed in several groups.  Richard just finished reading it and I'm looking forward to his insights.

It's funny but I retained very little of Hillbilly Elegy other than the Middletown connection. I think I've read too much Bukowski and Larry Brown and Harry Crews to be surprised at that way of life. (And I experienced some of it first hand.)

The flight I got on yesterday was a "Mercy" flight. Air Canada flew down an empty to get people out. So I was lucky to have booked it.

I read about the extra flights airlines were adding but nothing about Air Canada's "Mercy" flights.  I am glad you are in Montreal.

Now the story behind the story.

I almost missed the plane. I misunderstood what the AC put on their app. It said it was delayed and I thought it was delayed from 3:45pm to 6:55pm.

I was wrong!! However they got me through. I was escorted through security and brought my luggage to the gate. I was the last one to get on. I don't know if they were actually holding the plane for me, but I got on and about 15  minutes the door closed. Luckily they were still waiting for the paper work.

It was panic time!! But I made it on.

Wow, it is incredible you made the flight.  We still go early when flights are delayed, just in case.

I'm not sure what my plans are beyond a trip to the animal shelter on East 110th Street.  I have fallen in love with a kitten online, and I may return with a pet, if he's still up for adoption.

You are a good person to have a single cat since you are home a lot to give it lots of attention.  I have one suggestion, read what the best cat food is to prevent urinary issues.  You have too many precious books.

I was shocked to learn this is now required reading in many schools.

There's always a hot new book that fills this slot, but it's usually a novel, not nonfiction.

Back in the day, we had The Pigman and before that The Outsiders.

I am unfamiliar with The Pigman.  The Outsiders is on my list of books to read.  Having read "Hillbilly Elegy" is why I am surprised it is required reading.

I just listened to some of what he said.  If you believe in climate change or not, how the warnings of Irma could be a ploy to convince people in climate change is ridiculous to me.  No better way to admit he was wrong than by evacuating.  I just hope no one is in danger because they listened to him & didn't prepare for this.

I guess if the best scenario happens and it blows out to sea he will say he was right.

Interesting. I hope you can give directions to the link.

If you can google in the last 24 hours

"in face of irma" "landau"

it should come up and be readable

I'd rather not paste the article here, because I don't want my dad's and mom's names to be searchable here through google.  But i can email a pdf (5 pages) of it to anyone if they'll PM me their email address.

I just spoke to my parents.  My dad remembers giving that interview, of course, but was surprised that he was the lead paragraphs in the article.
