Oh, yes. I forgot to mention that. Fiddler officially re-opened last night with Fierstein and Andrea Martin as Golde. I would still like to see it. I know many people have expressed dismay at his casting, but I think it's fine. I admire his work, both as an actor and a playwright, and I would like to see what he does with the role.

Good Morning!

-I need to head out now and get my hairs cut - I'm overdue by about a week or so...  If you put a light bulb in my mouth, my head would look like one of those fiber optic lamps.

One of the talk shows had LONE STAR LOVE performing.  Is there an actual storyline?   The songs were catchy.  But not sure if it would be my cup of tea.

It seems that yesterday's topic is not locked. I just came in to see what was new and there were three new posts to yesterday's topic and it was listed above today's topic because it had new posts. I read the posts and clicked on Reply also and got the box allowing me to add. I didn't add anything to it but it seems to be unlocked.

Getting ready to upload some more NUNCRACKERS pictures. I realized I captured a few more than I thought, so I'll spread them out during the day. A couple right now.

The first act finale is a recreation of "The Nutcracker." In the show, my sister (Sister Leo) was supposed to dance the Sugar Plum Fairy, but she gets hurt early, so I come out to dance it for her. Unknown to me, the Reverend Mother had the same idea. Here's the moment when I find out I'm not the only fairy on the stage (in more ways than one!)

In our attempt to recruit some new converts to the faith, we solicit volunteers by dressing as the Village People and singing "In the Convent."

I saw Little Women last night. It's a pleasant show (damn it with faint praise whydoncha). Both Sutton Foster and Maureen McGovern are excellent. There is some nice music. McGovern gets a very good number in the second act where she sings her feelings about the death of daughter Beth. Sutton Foster has a big first act closing number called (IIRC) Astonishing. Unfortunately, it's not. Nothing in the show is astonishing. It's perfectly pleasant and well done. The costumes work well. There is good use of some rear projections for sets, unlike those used in Good Vibrations. The supporting cast is fine, it's just missing the spark that could turn it into a wonderful, emotional evening. It's a little long (almost 3 hours) and since it's opening on Sunday I doubt that it will be trimmed much. This is crass, but for $30 I didn't mind it. For $100 or $75 I think I would have been more upset. So, DR Debra/Vixmom, those are my thoughts. I think if you can get discount tickets (you will most likely be up in the mezzanine) your daughter will enjoy the show. It's not a great piece of musical theatre but it's a nice introduction if a child hasn't seen much theatre. The beauty and power of the book isn't always transferred to the stage but there are moments which are very nice.

Thank you DR BEN for the great review, and also for the TDF info.  I checked with DH and he DOES have a union card!! (After decades of working as a consultant he has finally been hired by NYC) so I think he'll be eligible for TDF.   So we will wait and go on the cheap as it were! (and who knows, you may always be able to wander down to a unused orchestra seat during intermission.....) I have always loved the book and never was satisfied with any of the movie treatments I saw.

She's only been to three Broadway shows, but then at 11 I hadn't been to any!  She saw CATS when she was 7 (I think, it was just before it closed)  and Beauty  & The Beast at 8 and then this past August  Wicked   (she sings every song from that constantly...Christmas 2003, DR WFO gave her the CD, its hysterically funny hearing her singing up in her room ( I don't think she realizes we can hear her) she sing a song like Loathing and sing ALL the parts changing her voice slightly for the different chararcters and singing REALLY LOUD for the chorus parts!!

When she was 5 she loved POTO and used to sing some of the duets from that using the same method, deepening her voice for the male parts!

Friday media check:

CD (car) - bk's As Thousands Cheer

DVD - PBS' Broadway - still trying to get through all the interviews; Sex and the City, season 3; from Netflix, Sylvia, a Gwyneth Paltrow movie about Sylvia Plath

iPod - Renee Fleming Handel, James Galway Quiet on the Set

For iPod users - I'm finding the earbuds very uncomfortable, both the ones included and a pair that my DH husband bought for his iPod and could not use.  I've finally resorted to the regular headphones that I keep here at work for listening to my computer.  Any advice or insights?

At the moment I'm listening to "Shlock Rock Almost On Broadway" - and, I'll wager, I'm the only one on the board who is. (My brother sent it to me.) Here's their version of "Tomorrow." (Maariv is the evening prayer service.)

Soon I'm going out to Maariv
I can hear the Gabbai holler Maariv - V'hu Rachum

Three stars have come out - To Maariv
Put away the job until tomorrow - day is done

When I'm hearing Barchu it's not me only
I just join up with ten and then I'll pray oh

Soon I'm going out to Maariv
So ya gotta come with me to Maariv - Be like Jacob
To Maariv To Maariv I'm going to Maariv - The start of a brand new day

Media check:

CD - Another LADY IN THE DARk with Ann courtesy DR ELMORE

VHS - JULIE with Miss Doris Day

DVD - AIRPORT 79 - THE CONCORDE!

I guess the Airport movies are my current boom.

As for the crickets....remember what David Niven said to Jean Seberg in BONJOUR TRISTESSE:  "Your crickets are having a cocktail party."

Media Check:

Only thing of note to report is that I've been listening to The Frogs OCR this morning (I ordered it direct from the PSClassics website two weeks ago on the pretext that I would get it ahead of the 1/25 release date--I only received it yesterday.)

It's not a very good recording, aurally speaking.  It sounds rather muted, overall.  And there is absolutely no separation in the performers.  Everyone is dead center--the chorus included.  Even most of the orchestra parts sound like they are performing in a very narrow space.

The performers, themselves, are low key.  They sound like they are doing a musical written by Chekov.  My favorite new song from this score, "Ariadne", which was such a beautiful and surprisingly warm moment in the show, now comes across like a funeral dirge.

A very disappointing recording.  I'll be playing my live ootlegbay much more that this disc.

Too bad about The Frogs. I, too, thought "Ariadne" was the best song in the score. I'll buy it because it's got material that's not on the recent studio recording but I wish it was better.

On another matter, Mr. DTM, you have a live ootlegbay recording??? Who do you know, young man? :D
