I bought The Great Ziegfeld DVD today. This is not from a popular producer so I wonder if the picture and the sound are ok or not...yet.

DRDanise,  I'm sorry I missed you!  I logged on to the site, went off to finish some pages of score, and came back to find you here and gone.

Happy Valentine's Day to all my friends at HHW!!!  As the proverbial bridesmaid, I have no fascinating tales of the day to relate, so I'm listening to Alix Korey sing "I Wanna Get Married."

I wanna get married, I wanna get spliced
I long to be knotted and see my friends potted
I wanna be confetti'd and riced
They say that married life is what one makes it
I'm sure I've got what it takes
But no one takes it
I wanna get settled, crawl into a shell
I wanna start cooing and spend my life doing
The things mom and pop used to spell
Give me a cottage small and a license I can frame
I wanna be Mrs What's-His-Name
I wanna get married!

Back to the pleasures and puzzles of BABES IN TOYLAND for the remainder or the day.  May all your romantic dreams be fulfilled today, DRs!

Love the older valentines!

Danise, since you learn from my posts, I was at the Central Park Zoo yesterday as I went to see The Gates. The hours are 10:00am-4:30pm and the admission is $6.

How's that for a succinct, to the point post.

I do like prosciutto and MELON. Great appetizer.

Happy Valentines Day to one and all.

We shall have a dinner out this evening. I don't know where yet, but there are places all over Chelsea from 14th Street to 23rd Street offering romantic dinners for two. We shall see.

I have no special Valentine's Day memories either. My first partner and I were together for 8 years, but that ended in 1990, so it's just too long ago to remember if anything memorable happened. My second partner and I lasted about 2 years, but that was 7 years ago, and again I just don't remember anything memorable for Valentine's Day. I remember a surprise birthday party that really was the biggest surprise I've ever had in my life, but that didn't happen on Valentine's Day.

THE GREAT ZIEGFELD should look and sound just fine (if dated since it was 1936 when it won Best Picture). It is probably my least favorite Best Picture musical, however. It's too long and not involving enough even though there are plenty of musical numbers.

I have the DVD but have yet to watch it.

After your description of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, DR Ron, I look forward to watching it later today. I recorded it last night since I was watching LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT.

Thankfully, my cable system alerted me that the show was going to run 3 minutes over the hour, so I was able to set the DVR accordingly.

My first Valentine's Day with  DH I gave him a circular saw.  It may not seem very romantic, but he really wanted one!

Today is my mother-in-law's birthday.  When the Vixter was about 4 or 5 she asked if that meant that Granny was Cupid, and was she (Granny) going to have to go around without her clothes shooting arows at people? The Vixter was quite concerned at the time as she didn't think it was appropriate for Granny to act so!!
:D(We set her fears at rest!!)

Oh, DR Rodzinski, you replied to my question about Penny's show after I logged off for the day Friday, so to reply to yours,  I believe most of us have already bought our tickets. Penny suggested we try for the 4th or 5th row so we would all be together.
I look forward to meeting you and your other half!

For the Doris Day fans among us (count me in) BBC Radio 3 Stage and Screen will have a tribute to her today. A description from the Web site:

Secret Love. Doris Day: Edward Seckerson offers a celebration of one of the great singing actresses with performances from Calamity Jane, The Pyjama Game and Que Sera Sera.

Here is the link.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/stageandscreen/

It's on live at 11am Eastern Standard Time and then will be availabe at the Web site for one week (through next Monday, February 21 at 11am).

If you want to listen, just click on the link above, have Real Player on your computer, click on Listen to the Latest Programme (unless you want to listen live at 11 est, 10 Central, 9 Mountain, 8 Pacific, then click Listen Live), it will open and load and you can hear the beautiful voice of Miss Doris Day.

I don't recall any spectacular Valentine's days in my history, although I often bought myself a big box of Valentine's day candy when it went 75% off! LOL!

Rodzinski, I have seen a few Wheeler and Woolsey movies...can't say I enjoyed them as much as your did...with one exception, and that is their 1934 film KENTUCKY KERNELS co-starring "Spanky McFarlane" and Mary Carlisle...it had some great musical numbers!

By the way, Mary Carlisle is alive and well and still living in Southern California. I spoke to her on the phone last year, but alas she does not do interviews, but what a gal! At 93 years old she is still spunky and bright as ever!

Cantaloupe Cheesecake

Recipe Submitted by Julie S.

1 box (18.5 oz.) yellow cake mix
16 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 cup pureed cantaloupe
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 eggs
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/3 cup sugar

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Measure out 1-cup dry cake mix; set aside. In large mixing bowl, stir together remaining cake mix, one egg and oil. Mixture will be crumbly. Press crust mixture evenly into the bottom and up the sides of a greased 13x9x2 inch pan. In same bowl, beat cream cheese, sugar and salt. Add 3 eggs and reserved cake mix. Beat 1 minute at medium speed. At low speed gradually add cantaloupe, milk, lemon juice and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Pour into crust. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes or until center is firm. Cool to room temperature. Cover and chill at least 1 hour. Store in refrigerator. Cut into squares to serve.

Wheeler and Woolsey can be an acquired taste, no doubt. But if you like anarchic, pre-code movie musicals and non-sequiturs, they are the best in my book. Their usual third wheel is the hyper-cute Dorothy Lee. I've heard KENTUCKY KERNELS is one of the best. DIPLOMANIACS is quite audacious.
