As regards Rent, the previous 'live' shows had very short breaks. On our cable service we have it on demand for a few weeks. I enjoyed Legend as JC--sexiest savior I've seen!

I'm watching Pete Kelly's Blues, directed by and starring Jack Webb, with a fun cast that includes Lee Marvin, Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, Janet Leigh and some might fine music. The script is fairly Disney and the production looks like it was filmed on a budget. But who cares?

Last night, Jane asked, "How many authors did you see there?" My answer: I don't know exactly. I met at least 10 authors (when I got their autographs), but there were many more there. I also saw a few others as I walked by their presentations, but I didn't go into any of those events.

Enjoying my new Kindle Fire, and today I read a two-act play, "The Last Monsters" by screenwriter, novelist, Hollywood publicist and Facebook Friend Michael B. Druxman. This mini-drama focuses on three great Hollywood Horror stars waiting in the wings to be called to appear in what amount to bit parts in the 1956 "B" thriller THE BLACK SLEEP--aged, frail recovered morphine addict Bela Lugosi, unknowingly on the verge of his death, grousing about his lower salary and a part without spoken lines; alcoholic Lon Chaney, Jr., fretting about getting his work in before he gets too drunk to perform and anxious about how the new Universal picture about his more famous father will depict his family; and the pragmatic, level-headed John Carradine, spouting Shakespeare and acting as referee between the other two, who don't exactly get along.

I was told once upon a time by another Facebook friend--correctly--that plays were meant to be seen performed and not simply "read" like books. But I found in the short time it took me to read this play that I had no trouble at all depicting the actual actors playing themselves--I could see their faces, and hear their unmistakable voices as I read, and experienced a deep sense of nostalgia in doing so.

It would be really wonderful, I think, to see this play performed by a really good cast, perhaps as part of an omnibus production with some of Druxman's other "Hollywood Legends" short plays. I think that would be an enjoyable evening...

Last night after my ALA Midwinter conference in Seattle, I saw Green Book with my friend Margo, and we both thoroughly enjoyed it! I thought it would go in certain directions, but it didn't, and that pleasantly surprised me. I had forgotten that I'd heard that it was "inspired by true events." I was really surprised when they said that the two men remained friend for the rest of their lives and died within months of each other in 2013.

And the Magnificent Ambersons. I wish I liked the book better, but Tarkington's casual racism is a little too much for me to stomach. I couldn't make it through. I had no active sympathy for any of the characters, but I did have an active dislike of too many of them. The movie is more successful, IMO.

I'm recording the SAG Awards because I'm making MP3 files of YouTube videos that will be used as sound effects for a play that a friend of mine directing. Hannah (the friend) only asked me to help on Friday, and she only sent me the links to the videos at about 10:30 last night (when I was at the movies), and a LOT of them are 10-hour videos of campfires noises, or river sounds, or waterfall sounds, so having to download 10-hour MP4 videos, then convert them to WAV files to edit, then crop them and save them as MP3 files is taking FOREVER!

And of these videos (there are 24 total), about 18 or so are very long, and she only needs only 2 to 10 minutes of each! The other six or so are short and much more manageable.

We didn't meet Bryan's in-laws until the wedding. We had a nice time with them, even went out to dinner together. After returning home we attempted to continue to communicate. Sometimes they responded and then eventually not. Oh well. I do envy people who become family with their in-laws.

My parents and my in-law were not close but they did get along and occasionally got together. After my mother died my in-law often invited my father over for the Jewish holidays even though we weren't there.

When my sister and her now late ex met and got married, both sets of parents became friends. Even after they got divorced and to this day, they remained friends.

I saw the original Broadway production of Rent several times, from the original cast through several cast replacements. I'm very fond of the show, but I'm passing on the broadcast with its interminable commercial breaks.

I'm going to make a DVD of it...without commercials...if anyone else is interested.
