I'm still sad that my original Social Security card was lost to the ages so long ago. Just having it as an artifact would be nice.
Mine was issued in 1963 or thereabouts, and my name and number were TYPED on it, on a manual typewriter. I was the only kid we knew at that time who had one at such a tender age. It was because I'd taken my first regular job which was playing the organ at a church for $15 or $25 per week.
And yes, back then we carried them in our wallets like anything else. I know mine became worn, but I had it for years. Then at some point, I just didn't have it anymore. I wish I could remember when that was. I must not have had to show it to anyone for many years. That need finally did arise about 12 years ago when I was first hired as a keyboardist by one of the school districts. I went to the local SS office to apply for a replacement, they sent two copies, and now of course I know to keep them safely filed away. But I don't recall any difficulty in providing the birth certificate and whatever else they needed, and I know I wasn't asked about any list of former addresses. Maybe because I'd been at this one for a certain number of years.
