Well, you've read the notes, the notes were judgmental, and now it is time for you to post until the judgmental cows come home.

Topic of the Day:  the only ones that I've seen are:

The Man Who Came to Dinner
You Can't Take It with You

Separately:

Moss Hart:  Lady in the Dark (only know the score), A Star is Born (movie),

George S. Kaufman:  June Moon (I have the video with Jack Cassidy and Stephen Sondheim), Of Thee I Sing and Let 'Em Eat Cake (I only know these two from recordings), Dinner at Eight (movie), Stage Door (movie)

I wish I could see their original Merrily We Roll Along.

Today is the 25th anniversary of OJ Simpson's Bronco chase. It was a Friday. That means as well that 25 years ago today I flew to Ohio for the week to be with my dying mother.  I spent my days driving a rental car to and from my parents' house to the hospital in Dayton.  Once there, I would check in with my mother and her nurses, then head for the cafeteria where I set up shop at a table for the rest of the day.  I had two or three charts to write for BK's "Christmas on Broadway" recording, and each evening on my drive back from hospital I stopped at a Fed Ex dropoff to send music back to NYC.

I would leave my table occasionally and return to my mother's room, where I spent time with her sister Dorothy, various cousins, my dad who drove up later than I did, and my brothers.  Each day watching my mother was like watching a building close down - a window here would go out, then another - as dementia and small strokes closed her systems down.  No one should walk into a room to find a naked mother trying to remove a catheter.

When I think of Sally from Follies, my mother is the closest I know to be the part.  This is her graduation photo before disillusion, personal demons, and depression stole her dreams.

So, today is the 25th anniversary of the worst three weeks of my life.  I flew back to New York at the end of the week on June 24 to finish up the "Christmas On Broadway" work.  The next week I had to deliver the charts for Sally Mayes' Comden & Green album.  My mother had rallied the day before I flew back to NYC, and I thought, perhaps things are changing.  My asshole brother Macbeth had become angry with me for stating the day before after watching my mother talk to a number of dead relatives including her parents and several sisters that she was dying and would not leave the hospital alive.  I had seen too many friendscwith AIDS before their passing, and it all seemed too familiar.

So I flew back to Ohio on a Friday afternoon. That morning I walked into my mother's room where a nurse begged me to try to get her eat.  For the entire morning, my mother was completely still and comatose.  When my dad arrived and saw the state  she was in, he broke down and wept, saying she;s never coming out of here alive, and I told him IU thought she was very near death.  The day before she had rallied, and I took that as a good reason to fly back, finish BK's recording and get everything frozen for the Comden & Green album.

When I said goodbye to my mother, I put my arms around her, bent down, begged her to eat, told her I'd be back after Monday, and kissed her cheek.  She opened her eyes, looked lucidly at me, and said, that's the last you'll get. Then she drifted back to her comatose existence.

I wept all the way to the airport.

On Monday night, Randy called me to say our mother would not last the night.  I told him I would fly back on Tuesday.  Aropund three hours later he called back to say she was dead.

I flew back to Dayton, my brother Macbeth and his then fiancee Lady M picked me up.  They asked me how my flight was, and that was the last time they spoke to me for about two years.  After the funeral, I began orchestrating Sally's opening number "Fireworks," and I flew back to New York.  On Friday I went to Patrick Brady's apartment to show him what was written, and he said they were adding one more number, "When the weather's Better," to the recording.  Since I was behind, I asked him if he could write the chart.  When La Mayes, who showed up to rehearse as I was leaving, heard this, I could see she was not pleased.

And so began the third week from hell.  She was not pleased.  When friends stopped by the sessions, she introduced them to everyone but me, she talked about how fabulous Patrick's chart for "When the Weather's Better" was whenever I was in hearing. My memory is that we began on July 5 since Monday was the 4th. We recorded the rhythm and vocal tracks, then the string tracks, and I had to call BK and tell him I could not finish the brass and reed parts for the last session on Wednesday.  I was burned out, the sessions had been so unsettling and negative that I no longer cared.

We recorded the few charts we could on Thursday, the players agreed to finish up on Saturday morning, and I went home, called my dad, asked him for around a thousand dollars to pay the players for the last session.  He wired me the money, and on Saturday we finished the recording and I paid the players for the session.

I will always love BK for his patience that week.  As for the recording, it turned out rather well, and Patrick did a very good job with "When the Weather's Better."

If today is the 25 anniversary of OJs bronci run then it is the 25 anniversary of the last vacation I took with my parents.
