Slept in a little bit, then laid about in the recliner for a good long while, ketchuping on various and sundry.

I think that, like DR Elmore, I don't remember too much penny candy, as such, but things like those root beer barrels and the little Coke bottle things and wax candy lips (ew!) were favorites. I instantly thought of candy cigarettes, too, but I don't know if they were penny candies.

The earliest nickel candy bars I remember liking (most candy was five cents then) were 3 Musketeers, which were introduced to my sister and me when my mother brought them home for us from a temporary secretarial day job she had for a while. We had surely had a few other of the big names, but that's a memory that has stuck around. I recall loving Payday, and I've always remembered discovering the original Chunky all by myself at around age nine when we had moved to where it was only a two-block walk to Main St. and there were wonderful things to behold. LifeSavers and chewing gum were always around. But for what seemed like the longest time, everything was a nickel. Another significant candy memory was at my great grandmother's house in Morgantown WV, where there was always a huge glass bowl of Good & Plenty on a buffet or side table in her dining room. That was my first exposure to those, and whether or not I was crazy about them then, I can't say, but upon "rediscovering" them some years later, I was indeed crazy about them and damn it, I could eat a box of those right now.

Once I'd gone away to school and then moved to California, I think I didn't much buy candy except sometimes at movie theaters. Oh, I forgot that -- in those earlier years, Milk Duds were a favorite at theaters. (Can't stand them now; they're possibly the one childhood favorite that never held up once somewhat more adult tastes were acquired.) So anyway, there was some moment, probably in my L.A. years, when I wanted to experience my old favorite Chunky again, and I was shocked at how expensive everything like that had become. But worse, it just didn't seem to be as good.

So I looked it up a while ago. It seems that the original Chunky I knew as a kid contained milk chocolate, raisins, cashews, and Brazil nuts. Wow! Nice. And I was always crazy about it partly because of the raisins. However, around 1984 Nestle took it over from its previous owner and it became milk chocolate, raisins, and just peanuts. When a damned shame.

Which also reminds me -- Raisinettes (however they spell it) were, and will probably remain forever, a favorite kind of candy.

DR Elmore, that's wonderful news about your phone call. One person spent an hour and a half with you? That's incredible. And wonderful.

Today or tomorrow I have to get onto the Connecticut website and apply for "gig workers" unemployment, since this is about the time they should finally have theirs in place. There's definitely money to be had once you jump through the hoops.

Since this is what I applied for, I was asked a lot of questions that were not easy to answer:
how many employers in the past 18 months?  Easy, with my tax records
why did your job begin? This year or before 2009?
when did it end?  These two were easy since I had my City Center invoices.
why did it end?  Were you let go? discharged? Fired? the computer does not undertand the subtleties

When you enter this hell, have your drivers license ready and all tax records for the past 18 months,

Good news from DR ELMORE!  And the money keeps rolling in.

Vibes for DR CHAS SMITH and any other DR who is attempting to negotiate the government labyrinth.

TOD:

Root beer barrels - although I swallowed one once and it got caught in my throat....most uncomfortable until it melted down enough to be swallowed.

Jolly Ranchers - especially the green apple ones, though they were hard on the teeth to be sure.

Candy cigarettes and wax soda bottles.....those may be been ore than a penny.....

PayDay was my favorite candy bar....I still like them, but they are very SWEET!

Almond Joy was second with Snickers Bars a distant third.....

Mercury is moving into conjunction with Uranus today.....so....

Have you been bored lately? You might not mind your repetitive routine after today’s Mercury-Uranus conjunction in Taurus unleashes its energy on you! This transit aims to distract and disrupt, leading you astray by tempting you to find out more about strange, unknown, or just plain weird ideas and concepts.

Of course whether or not you’ll play along is entirely up to you, but it’s hard to stay focused on a boring chore when there are so many more interesting things to think about. You might also get unexpected news today, and whether good or bad, it only adds to the oddness of the day.

I just spent 1.5 hours on the phone with Suad from NY State Senator José Serrano's office.  I am now registered for food delivery and (hopefully) self-employed unemployment benefits,  Suad was wonderful and patient, and I had a great time with her.  I need to call her tomorrow morning to confirm the unemployment application.

Is that food delivery at no extra charge?  This is great either way.  Continued vibes for the unemployment benefits.

I now make my own Raisinets with a handful of Ghirardelli chocolate chips and a handful of raisins.  Then I let the mix melt in my mouth a bit before chewing.

Last night the cats and I watched Pillow Talk, which I had never before seen.  I haven't seen a movie this un-PC in some time, and I loved every minute of it.  I think my favorite scene was the great Thelma Ritter drinking Rock Hudson under the table, although the whole cast is truly wonderful.  Doris Day looks fantastic, and she's quite wonderful and very funny, as is Rock Hudson, but it's the supporting cast - Ritter, Allen Jenkins, Nick Adams, Lee Patrick, and a pre-Follies Mary McCarty among others - that keep the pot boiling while the stars catch their breath.  Tony Randall was a kind man, but he seems to me to be playing the same fastidious, perpetually ruffled second banana, although he plays it quite well.  I don't know who played the black lady singer, but I loved her.

Lover Come Back is in this Day-Hudson set, so we may watch that tonight.

DR George, your package arrived today.  Thanks so much!

I haven't opened it yet, but I believe it's A Carol Christmas, which I will watch this weekend.

elmore, I agree about the black singer in Pillow Talk, she was great.  Her name is Perry Blackwell and this is her biggest thing.  She's also apparently in Dead Ringer as an unbilled organist.  I can't find anything else about her at all - no recordings, no nothing.

And of course the un-PC-ness is the best.  I'd love to watch it with a bunch of "woke" people, wouldn't you, just to see their heads explode.

Watching My Man Godfrey with a group of woke people was a chore. I adore that movie. It ain’t broke and it ain’t woke.

That would be fun.  And thanks for the Perry Blackwell info.  She should have been grabbed by some record company.

DR Elmore's report on PILLOW TALK put a smile on my face. And I needed that.

The only thing missing for me as regards the Thelma Ritter bits is any evidence of actual liquor in the house. I think we see her drinking what must be a Bloody Mary, but you don't see any bottles or paraphernalia around. Maybe I'm wrong, and maybe it doesn't even matter. I'm just comparing it to the more boozey films of that era.

Also love the wonderful black singer whose name Perry Blackwell I shall endeavor to remember. Now I've got to pull out DEAD RINGER again.  :)

When Ritter, in her first(?) entrance, removed her hat and there was an ice bag under it, I literally screamed with laughter.  She is so brilliant.
