UNCHARTED TERRITORY

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were in uncharted territory as they always are, and now it is time for you to post until the uncharted cows come home.

I was just about to post this last night when the day got locked:

As for the Bernstein thing, Mass is hardly a favorite piece, but a glance at this Ravinia production makes it look highly watchable and listenable.

I went crazy over it back in '72 when I first bought the record in Cleveland, and in '73 when I saw that first production by Gordon Davidson at the Mark Taper. At some point in there I bought the vocal score, and I want to say I got it at de Keyser Music on Hollywood Blvd. Either that, or I'd found it at Willis Music in Cleveland or ordered it from Patelson before moving to California. But I'm pretty sure it was in my first Hollywood days. (Yes, I sometimes agonize over questions like that - where did I buy this thing?? - just because.)

I have this concert bookmarked on the PBS site, but I found a couple of YouTube videos about this new version:

Mass at Ravinia: Virtual Pre-Concert Chat

and:

Mass At Ravinia: Making-Of Documentary

BK, congrats at getting the SACD at a VERY reasonable price!  One item that I'd been looking for for a long time was the cassette release of the studio cast recording of the version of The Secret Garden with Barbara Cook, with music by Sharon Burgett.  The reason I want the cassette is because that release has three extra songs that aren't on the CD or the vinyl album!  It's either been just not available or outrageously expensive when it is.

Anyway, I just happened to look again a couple of weeks ago, and someone had it on eBay for only $9.72...including tax and shipping!  It just arrived yesterday (and it'll be a while before I can listen to it...my sister's boyfriend will have to record it to his computer to make .WAV files), but it looks good, at least.  Right now, the CD can be purchased for as little as $2.49 or as much as $499.89!!  WTH?? :o

It's not a great version of the show (but not horrible, either), but it has Barbara Cook, Judy Kaye, John Cullum, George Rose and Max Showalter, who was also on the recording of The Grass Harp with Barbara Cook!

I have the CD, so I really just want the three songs, and I'm VERY glad that it was so cheap!  Hopefully, it'll actually sound good, too. ::)

It was a very poor night.  I wept a bit, tossed and turned too much, and I was up too many times.

It isn't this surgery that frightens me.  I'm certainly not looking forward to it, mostly because I do not know what my situation will be once the recuperation begins and I'm here alone with the cats.  What does frighten me is that I'm feeling like a house falling apart - these sinus polyps, my mobility, the reason I'm seeing my podiatrist this morning - and the nagging fear I will never work again or live to see 2021.

I'm not afraid of dying, but I'm not ready to go.

This morning Thatch vomited twice at my feet.  I hope it's just a hairball.

I do have some good news: the unemployment has landed, and I have a nice sum sitting in my bank account.  I can afford Thatch's echocardiogram and dental work now.

Cats' vomit is (1) what they do, but also (2) bothersome, sometimes worrying, and always a chore to clean up.

We had a rash of hairballs here last week. 'Tis the season, I think. But I also had a couple of the other kind. Oy.

We watched ED WOOD last night.

Fun movie.

One of the minor characters in the film (Paul Marco), who played "Kelton the Cop" in PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, used to be my publicity client back in the 1980s.

He used to go to autograph shows, dressed as "Kelton".

This morning has been a complete disaster with Food delivery, Time Warner, Thatch's vomit, and more.  I'm late getting out the door.
