Well, you've read the notes, the notes were imitation notes, and now it is time for you to post until the imitation cows come home.

For the last month I’ve bee recovering from emergency eye surgery. In a few hours as I write I will find out if the operation took as there is a possibility I might have to do it again.i cannot see out of my eye and have not been able to use my computer. I use my iPad placing it 12 inches from my faces. Reading and usually using the dictation button

My toilet once again has sprung a leak, and our super has admitted, after 4-6 tries to repair it, that he needs to bring in a plumber.  I think I need a new one.  The current one was cheaply installed over 20 years ago when the landlord redid all the bathroom plumbing in the building as past of a water pressure-conservation move in the City.  There was even a Seinfeld episode about the situation.

So, I may have a plumber in today.  I may also hear from my visiting nurse, but I would prefer to see her on Wednesday or Thursday.  The toilet leak is the priority, and I must make an attempt to do laundry today or tomorrow.  I still need a visit to the bank that I did not make on Saturday before the first of July.

I remember a period of my younger days where staging a show seemed easy.  I remember seeing lots of plays and musicals in revivals between 1960 and 1991 from Cincinnati Summer Opera to Lincoln Center and a lot of points in between that weren't tortured or beaten out of shape by incompetent nincompoops.  I bring this up because this leads to Rodgers and Hammerstein, our TOD.  The last wonderful revival of Carousel I saw was the Houston Grand Opera production of summer 1991, directed by a wonderful director, Gerald Gutierrez, whose one big Broadway misstep was the last revival of Once Upon A Mattress.  This Carousel made no attempt to PC the show, cut or rearrange the score, and it had an amazing cast.  The rumor was Houston wanted to bring it to Broadway but Cameron Mackintosh, who had the option, wanted to bring in "his" version from the National Theater.  People raved about the Mackintosh hatchet job, but I watch the youtube video of the Carousel Waltz and think, nope, you missed the boat, and the less said about the last PC sparkling clean revival, the better.

So, Carousel is near and dear to my heart, and I wish I liked the film more.  When I first saw it (September 1956?) I was weeping so loudly by the end that my brother Macbeth kept swatting me and saying, Shut up! You're embarrassing me.  Now I find it misconceived with that heavenly framing device and an overly coy actress playing Carrie.  I prefer Shirley Jones in Oklahoma!, but I do like the Nettie, Mrs Mullins, Robert Rounseville, Cameron Mitchell, and Gordon Macrae.

The orchestrations are terrific, but I still prefer Agnes DeMille to Rod Alexander and Bambi Lynn.  Perhaps if Agnes hadn't been so difficult on the film of Oklahoma!, she might have done Carousel.

I first saw The Sound of Music around 1961 when the national tour played Cincinnati.  I like the score and wish the movie had included the two cynical numbers.  I've never liked the film much, but after seeing the sadly inept revival from the 1990s and the last two TV versions from New York and London, the movie looks much better because the people involved knew what they were doing.

T.O.D.

The 2nd professional stage production I ever saw was OKLAHOMA! (The first was HARVEY with Joe E. Brown)

My favorite R&H movie musical is CAROUSEL.

Last year at this time, we were in Kissimmee,  hosting a breakfast for the Vixter and (then) Vixfiancee and their wedding party prior to the arrival of the hairdressers and makeup artists and departure of the men.

TOD:

The original Cinderella is perfection, though each new version somehow manages to screw it up a little more.

Yesterday was the anniversary of Richard Rodgers’ birth.

Ain't it the truth?  The only flaw in that 1956 Cinderella is Jon Cypher's reprise of "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful?"
