Got a copy of movie version of THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER today to burn a DVD-R. The movie hasn't been announced as one Warners is working on bringing to a commercial DVD, and as the laserdisc was one of my most played ones, I wanted a DVD in case the laser machine goes out on me. I'm really trying to get copies of all those laserdiscs, so I can clear some shelf space for DVDs.

OK - Another break.  Steve is cleaning off his computer desk, and once that is done, they we can start packing again.

So far, so good.  And it's been great catching up with his sister, Bonnie, too.

Question for bk

I've recently been approached to musical direct a production of "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change" and when I pulled out my CD, I noticed it was produced by you.  What are your feelings on the show?  Is there any dialogue?  Is it worth  skipping out on working on a production of "Ragtime" instead?

Yes, there are sketches in I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change.  I didn't love the show, but it's been running for eight years, which says that most people do love it.  The music is what it is - I like the ballad sung by Jennifer Simard (who I've used on a few other albums - great girl and singer).  Ragtime is a much more interesting score, of course, so it would be more challenging.

I wrote my thoughts on Closer a couple of weeks ago.  Liked some of it okay, didn't much like Julia Roberts, but always like Portman, even though I found her strip club scenes ludicrous (she looks like she's fourteen trying to act like a stripper).  I hadn't really cared for the play that much, either.

WOW!  5:00 already!

In any case...  I have a slight headache.  Actually, I've had a slight headache for the past couple of days...  And I think, unfortuantely, I know what the cause is... If it's still hanging around tomorrow, I believe I may have to call my doctor just to get things checked out...

But the sun finally came out, and although it's cool outside, it's nice to have the sun shining again.

I expect it doesn't seem like much to some of you, but stills from "Les Girls" are extremely hard to come by, at least in my experience.  So...I'm very pleased to have gotten one in color of a production number.

DR Matthew - When I MDed I Love You... a few summers ago, I had a surprisingly good time.  Small cast - 2 men, 2 women.  Then just me and the violinist.  We all got along very well, and we became a sort of family in the process.  Yes, the music may not be ground-breaking, but it's fun.  And "I Will Be Loved Tonight" is a good song, as is "Shouldn't I Be Less In Love With You" (or something like that).   And "A Stud & A Babe" is just plain fun, fun, fun!  -And the piano part is gratifying as some people put it.

Ragtime is great too.  Would you be MDing?  Assisting?  Or just playing piano/keyboards? -And the piano parts for Ragtime are most definitely gratifying.  Stephen Flaherty has some chops!

It would sort of be a toss-up for me if both shows were presented to me.  It would probably come down to compen$ation.

On a "practical" note, I Love You... is about a good 30 minutes shorter than Ragtime...

;)

Yes, bk, I remembered your critique of CLOSER quite well. I justhad a different reaction, decidedly more positive. I did think Roberts was the wink link in the cast, but I'm not sure that it wasn't the role which I felt was underwritten. Yet, having said that, I felt her breakup scene with Clive Owen (when she revealed the year long affair) was beautifully acted by both of them. In fact, I thought Clive Owen was the standout of the four.

And he played the Jude Law part in the original stage version!

And it definitely looks like I'll just able to "borrow" all of Steve's boxes and bubble wrap after he gets all his stuff moved in next week.

Which leads to an Ask BK, Ask DR question:

Is it really "worth" it to E-bay:

-Window cards (many signed)
-Playbills (many signed)
-Cookware (lots still in the box and never used (Calphalon, All Clad, Le Creuset))
-Books (some "special editions" and some autographed)
-Teddy Bears (I have more Boyd's than I know what to do with)
-VHS tapes - I'm particularly wondering about some of the Disney titles.  I have those boxes of "The Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast" that came bundled with a copy of the soundtrack and some artwork.  I picked both of them up - at different times - on Clearance at Border's.

I've done a little bit of checking over the past few weeks, just trying to get an idea of the going prices - and the current "need" in the market.  Nothing really seems to be that "profitable", but I know these things go in phases.

*I still do like my window cards and Playbills, but I have a box of stuff that I haven't even looked into at least five years, so...

-I'm still planning on keeping all my CDs, and all(!!!) my sheet music.

DR RLP - what a great color still!  I love the "performance" costumes in LES GIRLS.  And of course Kay and Taina are a lot of fun.  Mitzi is less to my liking, but that's always been the case.  And Gene - well....his comeuppance in his "serious" number is just the kind of thing I wish would always happen to him.  He is okay - to me - as a hoofer, just okay.  But when he puts on stretch pants and beret....OH BA-RUTHER!!!!

He puts the P in pretentious.

As always, it depends on what you are bidding on, the scarcity of the item, and, above all, what the price is.  Some things go for way more money than they're worth because there's someone who NEEDS that item and doesn't understand it might be readily available elsewhere cheaper.  But, I have gotten great deals on eBay - in fact, I just got my second copy of the Evening Primrose LP, which was signed by Sondheim in 1992 to whomever he gave it to.  I had a decent copy, but this one looks unplayed, so I'll transfer this to CD now.  I got my decent copy rather inexpensively on eBay - about $150, and sold it on eBay for about $400.  It, of course, wasn't even signed.  But, the guy who put up the copy I just got, really shot himself in the foot by just listing it under 'records: general' instead of soundtracks and cast recordings.  So, unless someone were actually searching Sondheim or Evening Primrose, they never would have seen it.  The fact is there were only two bids and I got it for just over the starting price of 200.  If one listed this correctly or put it up for auction, it would probably go for 500.  There were only a couple of hundred pressed (at RCA - Sondheim had them done to give as gifts).

And isn't an "official" soundtrack of Evening Primrose about to finally be released on CD (maybe on DRG?)?  I remember seeing something about it on Max's listserve.

Jose, I bet the signed window cards and playbills would probably sell.  I've had very bad luck selling Disney videos on eBay as we've upgraded to DVD for the kids.

I'd rather have the show itself (EVENING PRIMOSE) rather than a soundtrack, but I guess if that's ALL that's available. . . .

(I know bk has a recording of the TV show.)

A friend of mine has a copy of a copy of a copy, etc., etc., etc. (a King and I reference) of the video.  It's watchable.  Also, I had read that some time ago that for Sondheim's 70th birthday, Warren Beatty had a copy of the video cleaned up and he gave it to Sondheim for his birthday.  I don't know if it's true, but that's what I remember reading/hearing.

Oh, you know, I think it would have been out already, don't you?  It was "announced" five years ago.

The announcement I saw was a lot more recent than 5 years ago--it was just in the last couple of months, I think.  Unless of course I'm completely wrong.   ;D

A website HERE lists Evening Primrose and a whole bunch of other recordings to be released, but none have any dates...other than saying things like "It seems that this CD will finally be released next year" (this was under the Baker Street listing).

And under Jubilee, it says this:

JUBILEE - Orchestrator Larry Moore began a full restoration of this Cole Porter musical in 1985 and now PS Classics plans to record it and release it on CD and for that they can use your help, to see how visit: www.psclassics.org. The score includes “Begin the Beguine” and “Just One of Those Things”

Evening Primrose was "announced" five years ago by either Bay View or Harbinger (can't remember which) - since then, it has remained "announced" but, as far as I know, it will never be coming out.

Exactly. I'm re-reading Little Women (I read it as a youngster so many years ago) and enjoying it very much. I'm not sure what could be added by a novel about their father.

He prefers Little Men!

I have only been asked for my autograph once in my life (if you don't count FedEx, UPS &  teachers , which I don't) and that was it!  :D

He was a real gentleman, very obliging and stood for pictures etc,  I was still doing communtiy theatre thenand wa in the  'The Royal Family " as  the nanny, I only appeared in the third act.  The director allowed me  (this one time) to just show up in time for the third act so that I could be at the John Inman party.  When I explained to the station manager why I was leaving early, John Inman overheard the conversation and asked all about the play and where it was being done etc.  A very nice man indeed.

vixmom, you did community theatre and nobody ever asked for your autograph after a show?
