Well, you've read the notes, the notes were the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the everyday cows come home.

Today would have been John McGlinn's 67th birthday.  I met him in April 1983.  He had been working for Ira Gershwin on Gershwin show scores, and he came to an orchestra rehearsal for The New Amsterdam Theatre Company's concert production of the Gershwin-Romberg show Rosalie.  I had orchestrated several cut songs for the concert and he was complimentary.  He was at the time helping John Mauceri as well with the City Opera production of Candide, and I was curious about that.

In 1984, he called me and said, "I need an orchestrator and you're the only one I know," and we worked on the Book-of-the-Month Club recording "Songs of New York," the first major recording for each of us. Our friendship was difficult, tortured, and not easy; he borrowed things and money and never returned them; he broke promises and lost friends, but I never in all those years had a bad time working with him.  I once said to him, "your problem is you don't know which battles you can afford to lose to win the ones you really need," and in the end he let his demons destroy him.  Ted Chapin used to say that he burned his bridges while he was standing on them.

There were projects he wanted to record but never accomplished because of all those burning bridges: a complete Camelot, Oklahoma!, Love Life, Sweet Adeline, among others.  I believe in 2001 the stress of recording too many things for the Packard Humanities Institute gave him a nervous breakdown, and that led to a logn decline of work and income before a heart attack finished him off in 2009.  Rest in peace, John.  You are still missed.

I have no plans for today.  I have things to take to the basement, mail/packages to pick up, and God knows what else will come down the pike.

Well, those unemployment payments are listed as released yesterday on my payment history on the NY State Dept of Labor site, but they are not in my account this morning.

I have to change my ways at night by going to bed without the iPad or phone within reach. It’s become a habit to settle in but start reading or watching something, and then I get a second wind, and once past a certain point I can’t fall asleep. Then I toss and turn, “trying” to sleep, which never works. Of course eventually sleep does come, but way too late and it’s not solid or of good quality. And so it goes.

I just checked my bank, and an amount for two more weeks of that just landed. So now I have three. However, for me, these particular payments don’t get shown on my CT PUA site at all, even though they’re coming from the same place as the others.

And the scant information available on my bank’s site doesn’t indicate what each deposit is for. It just says CT DOL etc. and the date of deposit, which is already obvious.

The one dream I remember was a weird one (but of course!) in which I was with some people I know (but their identities aren’t clear) at what seems to be Walt Disney World, and there were a couple of strange interactions.

Isn’t that fascinating?

I have a basic distrust of ATMs. It didn’t start that way when I began using them some 25 years ago, because I initially liked the convenience and all. But within those first couple of years, a good friend and I each had three or four mishaps in both deposits and withdrawals that eventually turned me off to trusting that there wouldn’t be repeats. The time it takes to get issues sorted out isn’t acceptable to me, and the possibility of something happening with a large amount, or with a transaction that is absolutely critical for any other reason, is a risk I refuse to take on. I am all too happy to keep bank tellers employed by partaking of their good services face to face.

This was me last night, and then I woke up too early.

I do not use ATMs because of the stories I hear - from friends and family.

Of course nobody talks about the successful transactions [except MR BK in the notes] but I do hear some horror stories [like MR BK in the notes as well].

So I'll just stick to the old ways and means.

Our high temperature today will only be around 70 degrees so no air conditioning needed again!

My grass has refused to grow - so no grass cutting is necessary this week.

Alexa didn’t hear John McGlinn correctly and started to play someone named John McClain. No. Must go to YouTube.

I read tins of biscuits and imagined a variety of tins such as this.
