AFTER THE SUNSET would interest me more for the cast alone than THE NOTEBOOK (though Garner and Rowlands would certainly be worth seeing in their supporting roles). But I haven't seen either one.

I watched THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX today. The color is luscious, of course, showing up most impressively Orry-Kelly's magnificent gowns for Elizabeth in a rainbow of bright colors.

But there is speckling and some print damage present and, worst of all, scenes where the three Technicolor strips are out of alignment and there's color ringing all over the place in addition to being out of focus. I guess it would have been far too costly to go back and fix those scenes where the strips didn't match, but it took me right out of the movie every time it happened (which were long shots mostly).

The close-ups and medium shots of the stars were sharp and gorgeous. Yep, Errol ranks up there with Tyrone Power in terms of male beauty. Breathtaking.

Just read a couple of reviews of AFTER THE SUNSET.....I quit reading and lost interest when I read the name Salma Hayek.

Also meant to mention how superb Korngold's music score is the ELIZABETH AND ESSEX. It's majestic, lush, and endearing. What a master he was!

DR MATTH - last night in KIM made in 1950 - Errol Flynn seemed to have some skin problems I never noticed before.  Time marches on, and I guess it's true that it does march right across your face. :(

SUNSET cast members that might compel me would be Woody Harrelson and Pierce Brosnan.

JRand54, I discovered WICKED CITY in a bookshop in London last year.  The book was well-represented in most of the bookshops in town in their English history section.  My feeling is those that are looking for such material will find it without my help...and, if they can't, well, it ain't going to diminish my enjoyment of the book. I waste enough time on the internet without starting to write book reviews on amazon.com.

I expect that skin problems Errol Flynn was having in Kim were the usual blotchy blemishes that accompany acute alcoholism.  No one ever disintegrated from a paragon of male handsomeness to old man faster than Flynn.  The last time he looked really good was Adventures of Don Juan. And even then you could see the beginnings of dissipation. By the time he died at 50, he looked 65.

Sad sad sad, DRCP.  I was thinking that some of the KIM problem might have been the false beard he had to wear....you know what that spirit gum can do to you day after day!  It didn't seem to be a real beard, and in any case would have been dyed if it was - MORE PROBLEMS!

So... Here's the long book scene... Oh!  I have my digital camera with me...  Let's turn the flash off... Set the self-timer... Put it on the end of the keyboard... 10-9-8... Stay really still... 3-2-1.. OK... Let's see how it turned out.

Same thing happened to Spencer Tracy with his alcoholism. He looked a good 10-15 years older than he was starting from about 1950 onward.

Yes, today is supposedly the last of our early summer days (high 81) for awhile, so I took a walk this morning and felt so great when I got back home. It was wonderful to breathe the fresh air. I enjoy my treadmill, but there's nothing like a mid-morning walk when it's not humid and most people are at work thus making the streets relatively empty.

Larry, why do you think the keyboard key signatures in Pajama Game are so unseemly?  I have never seen so many songs in an awkward assortment of 6 and 7 flats in my life (I'm playing from the conductor's score, which makes the double flats about next-to-impossible to read).  I mean, I know the concert keys were probably chosen to fit the singers and to make it easy on the brass and wind players (who, after all, need it to be as easy as possible  ;D), but why in heaven's name didn't they just enharmonicize (that's a word, isn't it?) the keyboard charts to something vaguely readable like, say, B major?   :P

Of course, Tracy's looks never quite plummeted from the heights that Flynn's did.

DR CP just checked out some KIM photos online....not many available....and I think you are correct...it is a real beard - dyed!

Dean Stockwell was VERY good as the title character.

Of course, Tracy's looks never quite plummeted from the heights that Flynn's did.

Well, he didn't have what Flynn had to start with, but he still looked much older than he actually was. In DESK SET, it's hard to believe him and Hepburn as a couple (despite what we know now) because he almost looks like her father. By the time of GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER, he DID look like her father and like Katharine Houghton's grandfather. (Admittedly, he was very ill at the time of its making.)

Dean Stockwell turned in some impressive performances as a child. I'm kind of surprised the Academy didn't bestow one of its miniature Oscars on him.
