I was thinking of DR elmore3003 making his utility payment. In our apartment building, we never have to turn the heat on all winter. The radiant heat from all the other apartments means that it stays warm enough in here without ever turning the heat on.

Re yesterday's discussion about deviled eggs: Sometimes I substitute cream cheese for the mayo. Sometimes avocado.

In fact, I often substitute mashed avocado for mayo on sandwich bread and in the filling.

Yum.

I will substitute mayo with mashed avocado on a sandwich, or combine the two using less mayo.

A friend just had to evacuate due to the Santiago/Silverado Canyon fire in Orange County, CA :(

Vibes for them.

Thanks.  She is safe at a friend's.

DR Jennifer I missed the part that your knew Kindle is an Oasis.  I am excited for you.  Congratulations.

Thanks. My other kindle (which still works although slower) is like 10 years old. And I use it every day. So it's quite exciting. It took me a bit to get used to all of the new features (as it is very different from my older one). The main thing that confused me was when to use the page turns, vs tapping, vs swiping.  And there was one feature (where to find my notes) that took me a week until i figured it out perfectly.

;D  I get that.  I still don't use "notes" on my tablet.

I highlight and take notes as I"m reading. It makes it so much easier to write reviews.  I love the notes feature.

It makes sense.  I only take notes for books my book group will be discussing.  I expected to do "notes" on my new tablet and then ended up just putting my thoughts on an email draft with the rest of the meeting info.

Cooking took a while tonight. Between that and the dishes, I managed to get halfway through Beach Read. I guess I'll finish it. It's gotten better. As soon as the bet between them was made, the story seemed to take off. Just now, she's forcing him to watch a Meg Ryan triple feature. Sounds painful.

Tonight my book group discussed the Alex Trebek  memoir.  I didn't suffer reading it or discussing it.  Unexcited about both, yes.

Whoa. That's a great list, DR Elmore.

Did you see the HBO adaptation of Mildred Pierce several years ago? They followed the book and I remember really liking it. I need to see it again.

I'd like to see that. I thought the movie was wonderful. I saw a remake, too, but don't know if that was an HBO show.

Well, if I didn't hate this effing pandemic enough already, after watching restaurant after restaurant shut their doors forever, just got the news that on October 30 Jerry's Deli will close forever.  I HATE our Governor and our mayor.  If you're gonna shut down everything for eight MONTHS then you damn well better figure out how to help businesses.  This is on their heads and they don't care, they simply don't care.

Alexa introduced me to a Dinah Washington song that was too fun not to share. So, here it is:

Just broke my favorite coffee mug, burned my foot with the hot coffee that was in it and made a mess everywhere. Welcome to Monday.

Well, that's one helluva way to start the week! I've had years like that.

2020 has been that for many of people.

The cold front that moved in didn't bring the promised rain yesterday, but it is chilly outside today. It is heavenly!

I passed my dental exam today. The guy in the waiting room told me he was having FOUR teeth pulled today.  The sounds coming from the next room weren't pleasant.

Ugh! Four teeth in one day! I had all four of my wisdom teeth out at once, but I was sedated--and in bed for several days afterwards.

2020 has been that for many of people.

I started reading a book of poetry last night by Louise Gluck, who recently received the Nobel Prize for literature. The book is called "Faithful and Virtuous Night" and it contains this apt observation:

"... the days were very long,
while the years were very short."

She somehow manages to work in sex, horses, ghosts from the past and a little existential angst. You know, the stuff of any good poem.

What was actually a peaceful and rather nice Monday for me is darkened with shitty local news and thoroughly disgusting national news this evening.

Here's a fairly in-depth summary of the history of Westchester Broadway and the impact of its closing:
https://www.lohud.com/story/news/local/westchester/greenburgh/2020/10/26/westchester-broadway-theatre-closes-after-46-years-covid-victim/6034192002/

And then we have BK's news about Jerry's Deli. These two things can only be part of a domino effect, the extent of which is as yet unknown. I was only in Jerry's a couple of times in the mid-late 1980s - providing that's what it was known as then. It was damned nice and I've always remembered those times.

Decided to drown my sorrows in a little Wolfgang Puck salad - just a little dinner-sized salad with light dressing - it was surprisingly good and I had a little roll with it - if I went over 1000 calories it wouldn't be by much and I don't even care.  This weight loss crap has been eight weeks now, I think, and it's so slow as to make on just want to say forget about it.  But I will mush on for one more month and if the result in that month is a pound or two then I'm done.

Meanwhile, I'm into the Szell stereo stuff now - the first stereo recording was not brilliant, engineering wise, but it got better with the second and by the third they seem to have figured it out - these are 1959 recording.  We've has Schubert and Beethoven and Brahms and now have Strauss - he's so great with all this music and the band is simply tops.  Interestingly, there were three copies up well under $1000 over the last two weeks but they're gone now, all of them.  What a luck out this was being able to not have to put out cash.  Now, if I could only do the Reiner box the same way, but that one is rarely less than $800.  Ridiculous.  But that's kind of the last of the biggies that I'm missing.
