DR Jane the book that my niece chose was Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson. It's a YA mystery.

If your niece ever finishes the first book might you read the rest of the series together?

I think so. So today I saw her and asked her when we should have our next book club meeting?  And she was like "oh i thought we were done with that since you already finished the book." :)  I told her I took notes and would discuss it with her when she finished.

I think that we will continue the series if she likes this one.

That's cute.  I hope your book discussions continue for a long time.

Mephisto is thrilling. I've been interrupted too many times while watching, but both the movie and the central performance are as brilliant as I remember. And the parallels to today are scary.

ChasSmith, yes, as far as I know, the House of Pies has always served food, including sandwiches.  But I was only ever in the Vermont and Franklin location.

I'm up, I'm up - six hours of sleep, had a lovely breakfast at Jinky's - eggs benedict and home fries, so not that light, but I'll be good later and just have a low-cal frozen dinner - picked up stuff at the mail place, and came home, went to use the computer and no trackpad.  I of course panicked because I can't use the computer without it - I do have an extra, which I plugged in but that wouldn't work - I think I forgot to actually turn it on :)  I was about to go to the garbage can outside to see if she threw it out, and I texted her but she didn't respond at that point.  I told her long ago she could not touch anything near the computer ever.  But I happened to look at a small pile of papers and CDs that sit in back of one of the speakers and I lifted the pile and there it was, buried under all that stuff.  We just had a conversation about it and she promises she won't touch anything on the computer table.  I told her she could clean AROUND things but not move or touch anything.

DR ChasSmith, I would love the Fiedler Nutcracker excerpts.  I never knew that Reiner had conducted more than the traditional suite.

I think my friend Sam Irvin may be the director.  He was the person who turned me down for a movie score around 1982 because I had no sound studio experience, and I have been grateful to him ever since because that forced me to get some.

Listening to some music that came in to the library this week. First up is Chicago Christmas. They think it's the 1970s. It's not very good, but it is very nostalgic.

Next up, Linda Lavin.

Lavin's disc with Billy Stritch was just a load of fun. Two favorite Cole Porter tunes, Ace in the Hole and I've Got My Eyes on You, some Gershwin, some Berlin, some samba.

DR JohnG, did Mephisto have subtitles?  I wouldn't mind seeing it again, and Amazon seems vague about subtitles.

I think I've found Stella's Christmas gift.  I don't know if she'll read it, so maybe Annabelle can read it to her.  I'll ask.

Yes, but some of it is dubbed into German. I think some of the cast is Hungarian, others German.

I think it's always been a Hungarian-German goulash.  Can I trouble you to ask which DVD it was? Blu-ray?

It was a Kino Lorber DVD that the library just got in. From what I read, there still isn't a Blu-Ray.

I am ushering later today for a John Denver tribute concert. I always liked his music, never saw him in concert. It'll be a bit nostalgic and fun.

Tuesday night's opera is Marnie on metopera.org. I know the Hitchcock version has been discussed here recently. I hear both bad and good about the opera.
