Amazing how many fifth symphonies were written in the year of my birth. What's even more amazing is that I think I have recordings of all of the symphonies listed above. However, as great as some of those are, there are two compositions written in the year of my birth that are all-time favorites: Samuel Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915 and Korngold's violin concerto.
Operas written in the year of my birth include Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring, Gottfied von Einem's Dantons Tod, Gian Carlo Menotti's The Telephone, and Virgil Thomson's The Mother of us All.
Some shows that opened in the year of my birth: Allego, Brigadoon, Finian's Rainbow, High Button Shoes, Street Scene, and in London, a revue called Together Again - ironic as I would write a show called Together Again.
Some interesting films from the year of my birth: Nightmare Alley, Miracle on 34th Street, Out of the Past, Black Narcissus, The Lady from Shanghai, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Good News, The Bishop's Wife, Dark Passage, Angel and the Badman, Kiss of Death, Gentleman's Agreement, The Paradine Case, A Double Life, Life with Father, The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer, Brute Force, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Odd Man Out, Monsieur Verdoux, Secret Beyond the Door, Forever Amber, Body and Soul, Ride the Pink Horse, The Egg and I, T-Men, Daisy Kenyon, My Favorite Brunette, Mother Wore Tights, The Unsuspected, Captain from Castile, It Always Rains on Sunday, Down to Earth, The Brasher Doubloon, The Devil Thumbs a Ride, The Perils of Pauline, and many others. Not a bad bunch of films.
