Well, you've read the notes, the notes came to visit, and now it is time for you to post until the visiting cows come home.

BK, I don't think that's John Mauceri, but like you, I'm not sure.

DR Jeanne, if I scheduled my trips a week ahead, I'd call then the day before the trips to confirm them. I'm happy everything worked out, but you don't need the stress before surgery.

An on-and-off night of sleep, and none of the dreams have made themselves known. Would sure love to fall back to sleep for an hour.

In 1979/80 I lived two blocks south of Factor’s, and I enjoyed some good lox-and-bagel breakfasts there.

I remember driving down to where Beverly Drive circles around that little park and sitting there for a while reading. So BK’s house would have been just four houses to the east. For me, Beverlywood meant that area and the neighborhood to the south.

I did go back to bed for an hour and lay down with the cats. I did not sleep because the neuropathy in my right leg had it throbbing while ny foot felt as if someone were jabbing needles into my big toe.

I'm ready to return to bed for another hour.

Like you, I felt the same way 90 minutes ago. So I did go back to bed. If the damned phone hadn't rung, I'd still be there.

If I pay for my phone and the phone service, it seems I should have some say in who calls me.  Telemarketers are absolutely without shame.

I understand it's a job, just as it used to be a job for people who went door-to-door selling magazine subscriptions.  Yes, I sometimes subscribed just because the salesperson looked so hopeful.

But now, they call and you answer...and get no reply...and if you say hello again (and again) someone might start talking to you or you get a recording.  I have zero patience with that.  I say THEY should pay for that call, not me.

Yesterday warmed up, the sun shone, and the day was glorious.

Today, everything started brightly, but we have a storm front moving in.  The rains probably won't start until tonight.  Tomorrow looks to be hellish, weather-wise.

I love rain, but I don't love it over several days.  Let it rain, and then let the sun shine.

I had a most pleasant night of sleep.  I had pleasant dreams, as well.

Of course, it's a bit odd to me that the one dream that was most vivid was of me running into a former co-worker in Oakland who was coming to my business to meet with someone.  We crossed a couple of streets on foot, but then he wanted to get into my building via the parking garage.

But, I explained, I gave up my parking access when I retired, so I cannot get us in this way.  Let's use the main entrance.

No, he explained.  He might run into the person he was there to meet.

All right.  Color me puzzled and perplexed as to why I would dream such a thing.  I retired and never once went back to the offices where I worked.  I met with the people in restaurants, but I couldn't have been bothered to go back to the offices.

Oh, well.

I was thinking more on yesterday’s school lunch TOD, trying to recall what kind of sandwiches I would have brought from home. Baloney (I refuse to call it bologna), certainly. Cheese, probably. Maybe peanut butter and jelly. All very simple stuff, on white bread. And just American cheese.

DR John G. mentioned an olive spread, something I love but which I was never exposed to as a kid.

DR Jrand71 mentioned sloppy joes, which is very likely something we had in the school cafeterias. I hadn’t thought of that. I really liked them as a kid, but didn’t have any for a few decades. I REALLY love them now as an adult.

I was most amused at the reaction to my Manhattan imbibation.....I am trying to find out what it is that was called that on our lunch menus, but I cannot find it......

HOWEVER I did recall the Olive Wars.

One day when I was a sophomore, we all got about five olives in one of our plate compartments.  This was something new.....we had never had such a thing.....and they were black olives!

Sometime during the lunch, someone threw an olive to a friend, and then another person did and then another and another and another...soon the air was full of black olives being hoisted from table to table.

The lunch ladies scattered and started clapping their hands demanding that the disrespect to the vegetables cease immediately, but they were of course outvoted.

Eventually the ADMINISTRATION was called.  We were all properly chastised and had to remain in the lunch room for the REST of the lunch break.....

And olives were never served for lunch again.

Oh....a Beef Manhattan.

https://cookthink.com/the-best-beef-manhattan-recipe/

I forgot to comment on the Manhattan name which was most amusing. I had never heard of this dish, and it sounds great. And it even hails from Indianapolis!

I guess it’s not altogether different from a typical open-faced sandwich, then, except that the mashed potatoes go right on it? Speaking of which, I haven’t had a hot open-faced sandwich in several years, and I would kill for one right about now.
