The Theater Mania Guide to Musical Theater Recordings lists seven recordings of PORGY AND BESS worth discussing. The recordings which get their highest five star ratings are:

1. the Decca Broadway 1940/1942 Original Broadway Cast members recording

2. The Columbia studio cast recording made in 1951 and on two CDs.

3. The Houston Grand Opera Cast from 1976 (which also played Broadway). It's 3 CDs and would be my choice if I didn't have any other PORGY recordings.

DR Stuart - If it happens - and I should know shortly after Noon if all the arrangements were able to be worked our/negotiated - I shall be heading up to Poughkeepsie, to Vassar.  Again, it's not that far upstate, but it is "up" of the City.

;)

And quite far downstate of Rochester.   :-[  (I thought maybe you were called to play the extension of ACL here.)

MattH, the Reno gang got back on the force when it turned out that the DA was crooked and out to kill them all.  He tricked them into the desert and tried to kill them but they  in their incompetent way kept him talking until rescue arrived and gotten the DA's confession on tape.  Their insane babbling was, a la Inspector Cousteau, vieweed as excellent police work and they were all reinstated.

Unfortunately I forgot to watch this past Tuesday so I missed their first day back... I'm sure I'll be able to catch a reerun befor next Tuesday if I try hard enough.

Thank you, vixmom, for this information. I'll have to try to find that episode because it sounds like fun. This week, they have four prospects for a new officer, all of whom show the idiots how police work should be done. Naturally, they spend the entire show ragging on the new recruits' efforts.

Sorry to hear about your back problems, DR Michael Shayne. That crick in my neck (which I woke up to discover last Friday morning) took at least four days to work itself out. Driving was an absolutely nightmare since turning my neck even the slightest amount was agonizing.

So, here's wishing you a speedy recovery.

I watched “Porgy and Bess” on DVD a few days ago and I liked it,

Surely you aren't referring to the 1959 movie version with Sidney Poitier and Dorothy Dandridge! SOme of us would pay BIG BUCKS to get a copy of that on DVD! Was this a concert or is it the film?

DR MBarnum, I just went back and saw your initial response. At the bottom of the FIRST page yet, but I'm sure the server dumped me to the second page and I forgot to go back and pick up any messages that came after mine on the first page. I should have known this is what happened.

Thanks again.

Good Morning!

Well, it's official!  I'm heading to Poughkeepsie.  Tomorrow.  Early tomorrow!  -It looks like I'll be on the 7:00 Amtrak out of Union Station to Penn Station, then over to Grand Central to head up to Poughkeepsie.  Then right into rehearsal.  Whew!

So...

I shall be puttering and prepping over the next couple of hours...

Laters...

It means that if you also take the "Steel Magnolias" quiz, you will be "Truvy".

Well, I recorded a duet for the cd on Tuesday, which was good times.  My guest singer (who I do a website for) is faaaaaaaabulous.  She and I Carried on for hours.

Media Check:
CD:  Alanis Morrisette's JAGGED LITTLE PILL (acoustic), the new HAIR recording
DVD: The Golden Girls (second season)
VCR: Family Guy and Queer As Folk from last Sunday (who has time?)

Ron: The Truvy reference makes perfect sense. Thank you.

Our office is closing in 38 minutes. I, too, will be spending my afternoon seeing War O' the Worlds: The Cruisical Comedy.

I watched this Tuesday's Reno 911, but missed last week's!  Darn. >:( Yes, this week they were "trying out" new recruits.  They had several choices but one woman (whose name no one could remember) was the best of the bunch.  She had arrested a whole bunch of people by herself while the other officers just let her.  It was all very funny!

I'm up, I'm up.  I managed to get another three hours of sleep, and I'm sure I'll just fall asleep at some point today, hopefully not whilst driving the motor car.

I don't think there is a "perfect" Porgy and Bess, but I do enjoy the Houston Grand Opera CD (I believe they brought that production to the Ahmanson, and it was quite good when I saw it).  The Sony release has its moments, but it's mono.  The Simon Rattle has excellent things in it, too, but overall, if I want to hear Porgy I always go back to the Houston recording.

Friday greetings!  We had major thunderstorms last evening, so we disconnected our computers.  That's my excuse...

Tomorrow is my Saturday to work - how busy do you suppose the library will be on a holiday weekend?  There is a popular festival 2 blocks up, though, that should bring in some interesting people:

www.cityfolk.org

Congratulations, DR Jose, on your upstate NY gig!

Feel better vibes for all who need them.
