What shall I do with today?
I have discovered a mission: I am trying to subscribe to a health care plan for the new year.
Since retirement, I have been covered only for prescriptions.
As a military retiree, I have VA medical coverage. My VA doctor is in Aiken SC (25 miles away) and a VA hospital is in Augusta GA (27 miles away).
My United Health Care prescription coverage was taken out at retirement to cover initial costs I might incur before hooking up with local VA. For five years, it has been mostly a waste, but my medical benefit from County of Alameda has covered the cost. The County retirement plan affords me a generous allowance for medical coverage, and I have stupidly not been using it. I only get reimbursed for what gets used, so I need to maximize usage.
I want to be able to go to non-VA hospitals. I have been very impressed with my local VA care, but I would rather not be hospitalized there. I want coverage that will pay for ambulance service to a hospital. Right now, all would be out of pocket.
That is my goal. We are in the enrollment period right now. My provider says I can enroll online in about 15 minutes, or I can call and take an hour or more.
I have been online for nearly two hours and still cannot make heads or tails of what I see, so I am now waiting for someone to call me to explain what it is I am looking at.
Such is life in very rural South Carolina.
